Anyone else's dog got a 'bug' at the moment - and any ideas what this is?

Aghhh, I have a dog staying with me who has gone off its food, is sick and diorrehha and has a temperature.

Before anyone starts, we have been to the vet and (£300 and 2 visits later) have antibiotics, anti inflamatory and sent off for a parvo test - as it appears that the vacinations have run out, negative thank goodness.

But I was talking to a friend who said her dog had been horribly ill for 2 days before starting to recover with a 'bug'! She hadn't gone to the vet as it started Saturday and by Sunday eve dog was on the way up again.

So, the dog hasn't really eaten and has absolutely no appertite. It temperature has come down, but for preference would stand in the freezing pond which suggests she still feels hot and has about 40% of her normal energy.

Any thoughts would be great. I suspect that we are off to the vet again on Monday for blood tests, etc, unless she perks up. I hope that her insurance works as the owner can't afford the vet bills so it will be a hugely expensive houseguest if not!
 
It is a 5year old labradoodle. She apparently hasn;t eaten since Monday, she came to stay here on Wednesday night and we were in the vet Thursday afternoon, so treatment started then! I would have hoped that it would be having some impact by now. Could it be the antibiotics bringing her down still?

The only good news is that she was previously healthy if a bit overweight.

Any thoughts or experience really welcome!
 
Is the poo watery/fatty and pale? That in tandem with sickness, bloating, listlessness, etc could indicate a pancreatic/food absorbing problem.

I take it the vet queried a blockage/eating something that she shouldn't have done?

Yes, funnily enough people often drop their dogs off with us! A long time ago we decided it was less stressfull to treat all visiting dogs like our own, rather than ever querying/moaning anything!
 
Mine was ill recently with the same symptoms. She was very sick overnight then had bloody diarrhoea at lunchtime, very quiet all day then repeated. The vet told me she had salmonella poisoning because the last thing she ate was a chicken back, despite there being 3 other dogs in the waiting room with the same symptoms. She ruled out parvo because the dog is vaccinated but I thought they could still get it but not as severe? Dog was on antibiotics for a week, but picked up quickly after initial anti-b injection. Several people I have met out walking have said their dogs have been ill too, the horses are all coughing we need a big freeze to kill all these bugs!!
 
Had a terrible experience with my Springer spaniel last week - he nearly died twice. He was very sick, masses of haemhorragic diarrhea, heart rate of 250bpm and complete collapse.
He was on IV fluids and antibiotics, recovered enough to come home, only to collapse again in less than 24 hours.
To cut a long story short he has been diagnosed with Addisons disease. Life threatening, incurable but treatable. I am pleased to say that my lad is now fully recovered. (£948 later)
This disease in common in Standard Poodles apparently ( I also have a Labradoodle). The only reason my vet though of Addisons was because he responded to a steroid injection.
They thought he may have had Parvo, Salmonella, Campilo Bacta, E-Coli etc etc
Good luck with finding out what is wrong with your dog. Watch out for dehydration.
 
There is a bug going round in Surrey. Training classes etc have been cancelled because of it. Last about 4-7 days apparently.
 
I'm in Kent and agree that there seems to be a 'bug' going round. My older dog went down with it on Boxing Day - sickness, major diarrhoea, no energy. Emergency vet gave anti biotics, painkiller and anti emetic. Next day younger dog went down with same thing. Took them both to my own vet who said there had been lots of dogs presenting with same symptoms over past month. They were quite lethargic for best part of week but both made a good recovery after week of drugs. Dehydration seems the biggest problem. I started putting a little goats milk into water to encourage them to drink which seemed to work well.
 
Thanks again for the information - very interesting about the bug. I am wondering whether to wait for another couple of days before going down the (expensive) blood test route. Although the dog still has no appertite she is drinking so thats hopeful.

Always Henesey, so sorry to hear about your dreadful time it must have been awful. Have looked up Addisons disease on the web so will have a chat about it with the Vet.

Anyone else had this dog bug though? It does make me wonder whether just to hang on as the dog is normally healthy so if it was a bug should pull through.
 
So we went to the vet on Monday and have just had the results of the tests - lymphoma.

It is so unfair that a beautiful fungirl should get that at 4 years old. Everyone is devastated not words to describe how horrible it is when the dog looks into your eyes with such trust and you know that things are bad.

I have made the decision to take the steroid option and hope that I can give her another couple of months of good life.

Has anyone any experiences of treating lymphoma with steroids.
