Last week myself and my mare were hit by a car. We have some how come out very lightly on the injury front so far... although the horse is due to have scans next week once the swelling and bruising has gone down.
Just wondering what peoples experiences have been of the emotional aftermarth has been for the horse? Do they tend to then be traffic shy (wouldnt blame her!), do they tend to be more nervous afterwards? Any words of wisdom would be very greatfully appreciated.
Prior to the accident she was 100% bombproof

This may sound odd, but before you take her back on the road, sit a friend in your car with the engine running, and feed your horse carrots out of it, then drive slowly past her, again stopping to give carrots etc.
This may help her to get over the experience a little.
But they're all individuals and it's hard to predict how she'll react.
I hope she's ok for you. Maybe get someone else to take her in case you transmit nerves to her?

My mare was 100% traffic proof until an HGV driver wouldn't slow down and kept on coming, Mabs panicked and tried to spin around but slipped and fell onto the road trapping me underneath and skinning her knees and nose and squishing me. Sadly she hated anything bigger than a car after that.
Ruddy driver never even stopped!
Good luck with your girl, but don't worry too much many horses continue to be ok even after a shock so fingers crossed.

My friends horse got hit by a car a few years back. It was a really nasty accident and she (my friend) ended up in hospital after been thrown over the car.
The horse is fine with traffic now, just how she was before. It really didnt affect her and shes back to doing everything she was doing before.

mine was a bit shifty and seened to notice things alot more and question things alot more but not really a great difference good luck i hope all turns out ok

Both me and my mom have been hit by cars on different occassions.

Unfortunately when my pony and me were hit, only i survived:(

When my mom and Rolo were hit it took a good 18 months of slow work to bring Rolos confidence back, we started out walking in hand on the roads and then having a horse ridden on the outside and just progressed.

Mom had to undergo hypnosis as she used to get butterflies and feel sick when she thought about riding on the roads.

Im pleased to say although they will never be 100% both are back on the roads

I hope you have reported this to the BHS. They keep a list of accidents involving horses, or even near misses, as they are not recorded separately by the Police.

Please do report this if you haven't already, they really need this information.

Sorry about your accident, btw. How horrid for you. I hope your horse recovers completeley and is OK in traffic.

My old TB got hit twice in the same spot on the road.
It wasn't serious, he was just a bit bruised the second time as it was a landrover he went into, and the cars were moving slowly at the time. He wasn't any different in traffic after the accidents, and was still fine to ride on busy roads.

we were hit by a car and Thomas is fine on the roads, as soon as we were better we went out straight away.
The one who has the problem is me !!
Every time I dont hear the car slow down, I panic, and when I am riding with friends, I tuck myself in the trees on the inside. I am normally a very confident person and friends cant believe how much I change out hacking
