My TB did not seem quite 'right' when we came back from a little hack yesterday, dragging his head on the ground and shaking it about. When we got back he started to paw the ground, showing signs of Colic. He tried to spend a penny and took 3 attempts to go
confused.gif
... but he did some droppings
smile.gif

I turned him out and monitored him and he stood quietly in the field and did not show any interest in me taking Motor's BF out or much else
confused.gif

I then saw him yawning and sticking his tongue out and keeping his head down
confused.gif

After a couple of hours, I went up to see him again and he was standing resting in the field, he noticed me drive up ... he is never seen to rest in the field, unless he is cribbing
crazy.gif

I brought him in a couple of hours later and took his temperature, as he was not bothered about me making up his tea, but was eating his hay slowly. It ranged from 102.4 to 101.9 in 10 minutes, using a digital thermometer
confused.gif

I spoke to the Vet and he said that he would prefer me to find an mercury thermometer, as would never trust a digital one, and would come and see him if need be ..

I went back a 4 hours later and he was standing quietly ... he has a thick woolly coat, but was not sweating up or anything
confused.gif

This morning he seemed ok, but very quiet and had done some nice normal droppings overnight, not so many as usual, but he had not eaten alot
confused.gif
. His temp was 103.2, but then I thought about what the Vet had said
confused.gif

So I took him for a little ride and he seemed ok but quiet
confused.gif
(please don't tell me off for this
shocked.gif
). He normally comes back from a ride and does some droppings and wees immediately, but did not
confused.gif

I turned him out and he took 3 attempts to have a wee
confused.gif

This evening he had eaten his little BF I left and I took his temp again and it was 101.9.

He came in and started eating his hay and showed 'normal' interest in his tea (a very small amount of Happy Hoof and a carrot) and then promtly started to Crib ... which for him is 'normal'
blush.gif

The only change he has had, was the introduction of VetVits, Joint Supplement, the night before he went 'off colour'. The Vet said that if this has a 'Probiotic' as an ingredient, then that may upset him for a couple of days, but I have not given him any since and Motor has had it and is ok
confused.gif

Any thoughts? He is never sick or sorry, but is a quiet horse most of the time anyway ... I normally spend all my time fretting about Motor and TB just always 'gets on with it'.

Has anyone else's horse had any of this signs/symptoms?

Sorry for the ramble, but needs must
blush.gif

Could he have chilled kidneys? One of my horses got this a long time ago and he acted in a similar fashion to yours. He was a bit down in the dumps for a few days and then once the sun came up again, he was fine again.

I've never heard probiotics being reacted to in this way though. Funny as I use them when the horse isn't feeling up to scratch and horse usually turns the corner quickly with them. But then vet could be right - probably depends on what ingredients are in it.

Well I think you are doing the right thing by monitoring him. He may be going down with a virus or something. I would say that if he is still not himself by the middle of next week without any further symptoms then maybe a visit from the vet would be advisable. Ask him to take a blood sample.

My vet has always told me that jan-march are generally a horse's worst time of year when their resistance can get very low and they can pick up all sorts, a bit like us really.

Only you know your horse but hopefully it will be nothing.

Constantly but you know about most of my problems.
grin.gif

Ah bless him.Hope he feels better soon, you have reminded me I must go out and buy a thermometer.Lets hope he improves tomorrow

If you see my post in 'vet' my pony had mild spasmodic colic this week.

He was was eating hesitantly and looking uncomfortable but no sweating, pooing and weeing normally and his temperature was fine. But he was grumpier than normal..

Vet said they had had lots of cases with this very cold weather.

Might be worth getting vet out if you are still worried?

Tia and Tictac ... thank you so much for your replies
smile.gif

Tia .... I suppose, due to the continued cold weather here (nothing compared with yours tho
blush.gif
) that sounds very plausible. I am loathe to add thicker rugs, he is only in a lightweight summer rug, as he is such a hot horse and ends up with skin problems, if I try and rug him up
confused.gif
. But maybe I should get his thicker one out, in this instance, thanks.

Tictac ... I will definately get the Vet out to see him, if he is still like this in a couple of days, thanks.

Thanks very much and I hope your lot are doing ok? ... I just take TB for granted most of the time, but this has really upset me, as he is the sweetest boy out ... he just gives you 'that look'

Mine hasn't been colicky but he's had a really nasty bug. Came down with it badly on the 30th, foaming at the mouth and couldn't swallow/eat anything. Emergency vet came out and said he had ulcers all across the back of his mouth and his soft palate was v swollen. She took bloods, which haven't come back yet, but he needed emergency vet again on the 31st as he was just miserable. Coughing stuff up, still not eating or drinking, swollen glands and generally in a bit of a state. He was scoped and she just said he seems to have a nasty bug. Left him with ABs and bute, and he's finally starting to improve.

A couple of other horses on the yard have had a virus or bug over the last couple of weeks so I'm guessing my boy has the same thing. I did worry that he would colic but thankfully he was ok, just had what the vet said was the horsey equivalent of tonsillitus.

May be worth getting your vet out to have a look? The bute and ABs have def helped my boy.

Very interesting ... I am off to have a look and yes Vet will be called out to see him, if it continues. Vet was very good on the phone last night though

Goodness me that sounds such a worrying time for you

I have my two on their own a field away from three other horses who are also on their own. The yard next to me closed a month ago, so we do not get any 'contact' with other horses, so that is why I found this all so strange.

I hope yours improves daily. Please let us know how it is all going?

When my boy had chilled kidneys, he had a rug on and didn't need a heavier one. It was just that the wind came down from the north that day and must have whipped up and chilled him. I didn't change the rug he had on though. Gave him bute for two days and then he was fine again.

I do agree though, if you are not happy with him by Monday/Tuesday then I'd have some tests run on him.

Oh, just a final thought. Could he be dehydrated? Due to cold water and not wanting to drink it? I always forget about this one as we have heated waterers over here so never an issue during winter.

PS. I always use digital thermometers these days. Very unkeen on glass mercury ones after one snapped inside due to massive change in temperature from external to internal
crazy.gif
. Doubtful you would have that problem over there though as outside temperatures are not very cold.

I did a 'pinch' test tonight and thought it did not return very quickly, so I have added a bucket or water, as he has an auto drinker, as I thought I should monitor his water intake and a friend also suggested doing this.

I think I forget to break the ice on his field tank today as well .... oh my goodness, another failure

Tattys lovely doing great Ollie still the same broken ,coffin joint soft tissue injuries and torn tendon again!
Hope things improve for your boy

Even more worrying as I was in Edinburgh on holiday at the time with no way of getting home, so my poor YO had to deal with it all for me! I wasn't too worried as the vet said she'd ruled out anything really nasty and there wouldn't be any lasting damage, so it was more a case of just waiting for him to get better. Vet did say it could be an abcess but that doesn't seem the case now.

Thanks for the good wishes, he is improving daily. Been up today and he's better even than last night. Not been turned out since the 30th so YO could monitor what he was coughing up (thankfully we have a walker so he's been able to at least stretch his legs). Took him for a little graze in hand and he tried to tow me off to the field, so he must be feeling better
wink.gif

I really hope yours is on the mend soon, especially as it seems quite mysterious. Def chat to your vet.

Trying to tow you off to the field, is such a good thing in the circumstances and shows willingess, so sounds like he is on the mend
