Holey moley... just about made it back from yard.
Winds overnight were mental & they have picked up again.
The minute I saw my mare i saw that " fire breathing dragon look in her eyes"
So decided to do a bit of free schooling to take the edge off her.
She went NUTS , cantering at top speed , she fell twice , turned into a bucking broncho.
I decided NOT to ride as I do value my life.
It took me 10 mins to catch her and then she proceeded to half drag me across the yard.
Never ever seen her this bad - hope the wind stops soon:eek:

I never ride mine in high heavy winds. She goes bonkers :( not fun.
She can have the day off. Hope i will not reget that tomorrow as i have a lesson booked, first in a few months

No i am lucky and she is very chilled in anything really :)

Even a TB who has not been sat on for a year and half was walked and trotted yesterday in the school ( stupid i know) and behaved i was shocked :D

I had to abandon my usual morning ride due to the wind today. I never ride in the wind as my gelding just loses his mind! He grows about a hand in height, eyes bugging out and will literally throw himself around the school .... Not safe.

If you stop and just experience the sound the wind makes though it's obvious why it freaks them out so much. I did this while I was up the park with my dog this morning, just stood still and really listened and the wind totally distorts every sound. It must sound like monsters to the horses!

I think also the fact that random objects seem to go flying past them.. my two have had tree branches, buckets, contents of wheelie bins entering their field!

I am reluctant to add wind into the list of 'conditions not to ride in' as there have been rather a lot this winter, but my mare sure does spook more! Kind of hoping to power through as long as there isn't risk of trees falling on us etc!

Relieved to log on and read these posts! Mine's a total nut in these winds. Rode yesterday, couldnt get off quick enough..horse eating branches were moving and the school fence posts squeeking, nightmare. I did a lot of work in the centre of the school!!! Today turned him out and his morning sections of hay flew across the field the next doors paddock. Que major meltdown hooning about, he wouldnt go near the "sheltered" area where I could get the hay to stay. Ended up hanging a haynet on the fence. Dreading going back up tonight - will be a case of chucking him in stable and just hoping for a better day tmrw :-(

have to admit that I am giving it a miss this evening too. Rode last night and it was gusty but not as bad as today and she was spooky then, bearing in mind I am still suffering from a fall in feb I have decided to give it a miss too.

I don't ride in strong wind. Ponies don't like it and I can't hear traffic coming. I'm pleased it is windy as it is finally drying the field out, I'm not pleased it is windy as I can't ride! Hopefully will be a lovely weekend and the field will be the driest it has been in a year.

Rode both of mine today and were as good as gold.

Schooled the youngster, then took the cob up onto the common for a good blast - it was like riding in a tumble dryer and nearly lost my silk several times.

Such fun......!

Nope, youngster is expected to behave in any weather & even in the wild winds yesterday hacked and jumped beautifully. Only spooked when two ducks flew in his face but that's allowed as long as he doesn't use it as an excuse to be a twonk :D

I took mine round the gallops in canter and he didn't bad an eye lid- this time last hear he was super spooky but totally chilled despite 47 mile an hour winds
