Well you can definitely tell spring is in the air and the grass is growing!

Fleur is off her trolley at the moment! Yesterday was fairly badly behaved spooking left right and centre but today was a new level could swear she had been swapped for a wild 4yo. We passaged at least half the 1.5 hour hack (despite the three others out with us being as calm as calm can be!), had a good 3 or 4 proper hissy fits including one mini bronco/rocking horse effort when I thought we might for a split second part company  and even though then did 30 mins in the school to try tire her out/settle her down she was still bouncing with energy though thankfully more settled and less tense! Can I just have my sane horse back please??

So please tell me it's not just Fleur going fruit loopy at the mo?

Bizarrely (and very out of character) mines saner than a sane thing at the moment, whilst the other horses on yard are definately feeling the effects of spring grass  He's a welsh d x tb but it is at times like this I swear he's irish! :p :D

Me ME Me!!! Mine spent 5 mins yesterday spooking at a wheelbarrow upside down, in a new place!!!! then she nearly pulled my arms out, Ive managed to lunge her twice this week and everytime I ask for canter, we have leaps and jumps around!! Oh x-c schooling tomorrow may be fun!!!!

My boy has gone a bit nuts. He took off with me twice the other night schooling, the first was 1/2 the 20 x 40. Second time we did 1 1/2 laps before I could pull him up. I have also see then inside of his hooves a lot turning him out

Charisma is normally so laid back and can be lazy, but these last couple of weeks she has goe rather wild! No bucking or rearing thank god but so sharp and spooky, tense and generally not happy to stop when I ask her to!

I took her out in the sunshine this evening and normally the warm sun mellows her but she was spooking at everything, and every time I asked her to trot she ended up cantering down the road.

Hmm a lesson in half halts methinks :D

Last year I had a total nightmare, so 2 weeks ago I cut hard feed to a loose scoop of chaff and a meagre handful of nuts...so far I have contained the *exuberant* behaviour, but as soon as I hit the SJs this weekend I think the devil may come out to play!

hard food what is this thing you talk of? seriously she is living off hayledge (not rich stuff either at mo) grass and a small cup of balancer a day, oh yeah and she has been on Oestress for a month already to try prevent this behaviour (which surfaces for about 2 weeks every year). She is currently carrying a bit much weight (approaching 'show' condition though still bit thin for that :p ;) ) even though eventing fit so work load has been upped again and she is on walker every morning plus ridden every afternoon/evening and result is she getting fitter still but has just as much energy and the waistline is battling its hardest not to shrink :p

Oh well hopefully in a few weeks once she has got over her sugar high normality will resume, could quite do with it happening before our first BE run of the year next weekend though.... (I don't like my chances on that happening LOL )

Nope, been having baby "issues" for a month or so but the last few weeks we are back to being fab :D:D:D:D:D:D sooooooooooo pleased.

I do feel your battle with the waistline, hers and mine ;) she's still in winter fields on soaked hay and topspec balancer and still looks far too "well"

Yes ours are!

We have super rich grass at our yard it's like rocket fuel!

My horse is being a bit spooky, distracted and piggy and my mums is being a bit sharp too. We went for an hour hack this morning and mums horse was doing super sharp spooks left and right, mine would plod along lulling me into a false sense of security and then suddenly fly up a bank sideways for no reason or randomly open his gob and canter off down the road! Got them back to the yard where we decided to take them in the school and both were being a bit obnoxious. Turned mine out and he went bombing off the field so me working him had obviously made jack all difference to his energy levels!

I've got dressage Sunday, I've never bothered working him before a show before but I'm going to lunge him first thing!

Both boys look very shiney, very well and with very very bright cheeky eyes!

Yes! Mine has been bucking and spinning and mini rears and just wants to go go!
Funnily enough I don't normally use calmer but we gave him some Blue Chip Karma on the off chance it would work and he was a lot more chilled today.

Mine (ex-racer) had his phase about a month ago, but thankfully it didn't last long (I think our grass must have come through early!)
But after today's xc schooling, I'm thinking putting him on oats for a week might be in order before next weekends HT!!

oh dear me, I saw this heading few days ago and thought "that's not about my horse, he's too lethargic now", well what do you know, literally 3 days ago he went looney, spooks at the most idiotic things, refuses to stand, back up etc etc. I'm tired. I know it's not a physical issue because he does stand and back up from the ground. Went for a hack today hoping to admire the blossoming greenery, well all I got to admire was the majestic Spanish g*t prancing around. He looked upset when we got home because I didn't let him get away with anything and would not have any of his spinning. I'd actually be angry at him if I wouldn't be so damn tired. Will try feeding him some calmers... I hope it goes away, I want my safe obedient hardworking horsey back........ :(

I did today and it's put me on a small downer :( What he did was quite a minor thing (get excited and throw in a buck on a road then get too strong) but after months of him being a b***er to hack out over winter i lost my nerve, i've just got it back and silly me takes horsey on a route he hasn't been for a while (hence excitement) and full of spring grass etc. I've decided to stick to the routes that i know he is fine with even if it does get a bit tedious, think i will have to build up to going other places as really don't want to lose confidence again.

From reading a few of your posts is it okay to temporarily give some calmer even though we only hack/light school and jump???

(Sorry realised after that this is in CR but could do with the advice!)

Mine too....

interestingly read about spring grass being deficient in magnesium as it grows quickly, and magnesium is a main part of chlorphyll... Magnesium is important for the relaxing of muscles and hence feeding a magnesium supplement when the spring grass comes through should, theoretically, help keep a relaxed horse...

My calmer is coming out of the bottom of my tackbox tomorrow, horse is a total fruitloop.

If you're not already using Global Herbs, I'd really recommend giving them a try. I have had sucess with both RigCalm and MagCalm. The results from RigCalm were quite astonishing (it does have warnings on the box and everything about using it in stallions etc as can reduce fertility etc.) but also found MagCalm seems to be very effective. Having tried Magic/Feel Good 30/other herbal ones, this one seems to be the best.
