My cob has been as good as gold lately, well behaved and not his usual speed freak self. Except for this weekend! On sat decided to do a few jumps, and we got into the school, I got on and I had gotten no further than the oposite corner than he decided he wanted to canter adn he wanted to do ot now, but it wasn't his usual as fast as god grants me flat out, it was more like sitting on a space hopper! We were covering less ground that we do in trot!

But he was keen to jump and fired himself at the tiny one, so I decided to try the 2ft6 spread - well - evidentally we have 'launch control' and he decided he must be about 17hh and a BSJ horse and did that powerfull ground grabbing canter into it and then threw himself over it!

Not like him at all - what is more not like him is that I then whacked it up to 3ft and he didnt refuse even though I was bricking it and shaking I was soo nervous - he obviously thinks mummy needs to stop being a chicken!

Just got no idea what has gotten into him!! He only getsd Baileys #14 and a handful of chaff!

Sounds exciting haha! Maybe he was just having a 'day' and won't do it again..or at least for a while. But you could try grids if he continues to do this. Try them in trot and then canter if he is good in trot. My favourite with horses who are fast or rush is a series of 5 or 6 (or as many as you have!) jumps one stride apart. They are only small, even cross-poles but all at the same size. This should help him get into a rythm as he jumps as he can't really go fast over a 1 stride, and try circling infront of the first jump too until he is how you like it and you are in control, then let him jump.

Or..try trotting poles/cantering poles infront, after or inbetween jumps, it's quite a lot of hassle doing that but it does work!

Sounds fun to me, my cob is so lazy you could put a rocket up his bum and he still wouldn't move!

jakesmydog: It can be fun, but sometimes 600kg of nutty animal isnt not. It was interesting as never experienced launch control as I would usually just not ride if he was in that mood but the 'new improved not a chicken' rider in me went for it - plus being watched by 2 teenagers with BSJAing horses I didnt want to look like a woose.

I do really want to try grids, just need someone to alter them for me!
