Anyone Else's Mares Gone Spooky the Last Few Days?

All ours have gone super spooky and sensitive. Even Dizzy has been spooking at things that she normally wouldn't turn a mane hair over; she spooked at a piece of paper, at a wagon passing her (loads pass when we're hacking and she's never been bothered), and at the wind in the trees! Other mares have gone a bit whappy as well.

Just wondering if it's something in the air, the strange weather/temperatures for the time of year, or there is a conspiracy amongst mares... 8-)

I do sometimes think on odd winds that strange aromas may waft over from other continents but you usually hear about things on the weather reports like that. Did you have those couple of much colder days MrsM that we've had? I wonder if a big drop in temperature makes them a bit more reactive? Haven't noticed the few mares on the yard where I am being funny but not seen them ridden this week.
 
It's a conspiracy :D

Mine spooked at some water trickling out of a drainage pipe next to her field that has always been there and water has always trickled out of it, but it was scary trickling water yesterday.

She also grew 10ft because someone was walking across YO lawn, there's always people around.

On the flip side, the corner of doom in the school doesn't seem to bother her anymore. So we no longer have the 6ft leaps because a leaf rustled :rolleyes:
 
Dizz has reacted rather weirdly to the light and temperatures, so maybe it's a side-effect of that.

Was a bit of a surprise to be shooting sideways on the hack the other day - we've not done that for a long time :eek::cool:
 
Yes yes yes mine was absolute nightmare on Monday and on tuesday was very grumpy when a gelding dared to look at her! I posted on here about it perhaps being her final/ transitional season of the year and a few people agreed it might be.

She hasn't displayed any more season like symptoms but she was still a bit more spooky than usual (she is quite spooky anyway) tonight.
 
yes my mare who doesnt ever really spook when out hacking wouldnt go past some men at work road signs yesterday just stood there snorting at them and spinning round got past in the end maybe because i am cutting down her oestress for the year
 
Yes,our mare was horribly grumpy and jittery last week,wouldn't even walk into the yard without playing up.As we've never previously noticed her coming into season,we weren't sure what it was.Turned out that she was in season,she had sticky back legs at the weekend,which confirmed it.
 
yes mine is very lively at the moment, ran off with me this morning as a bird scarer went off, normally hardly takes any notice and it wasnt even near us!!!
 
Hmmm mine was spooky this morning but shes always spooky, the bit that surprised me though was that she didnt spook more than usual as I rode her at 7.30am in the dark :p But I did notice that she was in season last week and thats the first time (since her first season of the year) shes showed any signs of being in season!! She was still as sweet as pie though :D
 
Ours have been as daft as brushes this last week or so! The Appy was a right pain to hack out last weekend, trees etc were going to kill her, bite her legs off, to the extent that she spun in the road in front of traffic when a man made some twigs snap in his garden! Then the Big Beasty has been a right pratt coming in, normally heads straight for her box except that this week she has been doing some very silly dancing round the yard! :D
 
I was happily chatting away to new riding buddy saying Oh Trixie doesn't do spooking and whoosh ping you guessed it - Spooky horse!!! She hasn't spooked in 2 years but today she decided to treat me. I just laughed and said lovely dear now get on with it :D
 
Mines always a bit of a diva but kinda comes round when you tell her to get over herself, having said that our gelding was a total loon tonight
 
My mare has been a bit nutty the last few days, think it's the drop in temp! Lunged her today, she thought about being naughty so told her off and she ended up cantering around the pen quite a few times!!! Was a nice canter though! Thought she would behave after that though...
 
My normally spooky gelding must have sent them all his jitters - this week we've had wind, blowing leaves, noisy drains, cows, tractors, scary poles in new places... and not a hair has been turned. Was wondering if someone had swooped him during the night ;)
