My cob has returned to work after a good 10 months off, she is now rising 5 and done some considerable filling out over the time she has been off. Before turning away she was chilled and very laid back, but lacked sparkle and would tire easily so never did much with her. I started riding her again just before the snow and did a good week walking 25 min hack on a circular route. She was very calm and completely her old self. She then had 4 days off due to snow and i started riding her again the other morning . I hacked with a friend. On our route there was a large pile of snow lurking behind a gateway on the road, she was scared but i made her go past it, she kept trying to spin, next thing she flew past and bolted - that scary sort of bolt where there ears fly back, head goes up and you haven't a hope in hell stopping! luckily she did about 4 or so canter strides then pulled up. I took her out this morning on my own and she was incredibly keen and really walking out which makes a massive change from when i used to have to keep constant leg on. She was so keen but everything we passed her eyes where on stalks
we passed the lurking snow pile which had shrunk but still had a bit of a battle getting past - only for a min or 2 but she went past steadily with lots of "good girl* comments and pats and strokes, still at a pace but at least didn't try and bolt
the rest of the ride was a very spooky snorty one!!
Its funny though as we have to pass some dogs who live out in kennels with cages, they bark like mad and jump up at the cages yet she doesnt bother, same with large tractors/lorries its silly things like snow or flappy
partridges that jump out that get her going!
She is a good weight lives out 24/7 has ad-lib hay and is fed once per day - sugar beet and chaff. As far as i can see there's very very little grass as the field is so boggy.
So is it just the time of year when there feeling a bit good or do you think this is just how she is going to be from now on now she has matured?!
