Anyone ever had a horse who has broken their nose?

So my sharer's instructor has asked about the lump on Loki's nose, she thinks it has been broken :(

It happened back when I first got him, he was tied up in the stalls, head down and eating some hay, he lifted his head up and cracked his nose off the metal bar across the front giving himself quite the lump and a small cut.

At the time I covered it in antisceptic spray and then sudocreme for the following few days. The next day after the shock had worn off I had a wee poke about to see the surrounding area was sore. It wasn't sore and the lump did go down in a reasonable amount of time, I felt sorry for him but as he wasn't sore and it didn't take too long for the cut to heal and the initial swelling to go back down and although he ended up with a bit of a lump it just became part of his "character" - he went through a bit of a self harm phase when he was 5 and I used to bring him in every day with some new minor cut, usually on his face where he'd stuck his head where it probably shouldn't have been so he carried the nickname "scarface" for a while :redface3:

Now he just has a bit of a lumpy nose but it doesn't seem to effect him or his breathing though and I was just wondering if there was anyone out there who had experienced a horse with a broken nose before and if it effected them at all in later life?

Known two horses that have broken their noses. One was a few years ago, the other was about 4 weeks ago.

Both are fine. Both event (one 1* and the other EvA105/Pre Novice) successfully. The recent one was given the all clear by his vet before eventing this weekend. His owner has been schooling him without a noseband but at the event this weekend, she will be using a noseband. It will be done up loosely and his vet has said he should be fine.

Both were given Bute initially to help with the pain but have recovered and seem to be recovering fine. :)

I think Ned had a broken nose. When he first came it looked like he had a golf ball under his skin! I can't ride him in a bitless because of it, which is annoying, because until it became too painful for him, he went really well in it :(

Yes one of my horses broke her nasal bone/skull last year. It is just below her eyes, you can see she has a number of lumps. Originally when she first broke it there was just one lump but it moved as it healed and there's now some concave bits where the chipped off bones settled. We left it when she did it as apart from her going in for surgery under GA (which was not happening as she was pregnant and also had a foal at foot) there wasn't anything other than that which could be done. It took a few months to heal and settle and she was fine throughout. This is a piccy of her last week and you can see that apart from being a bit lumpy bumpy, she's just fine.

Mine did something similar to Spring Feathers, only if was a big flap fracture probably 3 inches wide at the top 4 inches long and shaped like a triangle, she also smashed of 4-5 pieces of bone of her eye orbit and had a pretty spectacular flesh wound. The vet managed to replaced the bone flap once removed from her nasal cavity and it has healed really really well, actually much less bumpy that Spring Feathers. The first vet (emergency vet) missed the flap, but I knew something was going on because I could hear a very subtle noise when she was breathing, so called out my usual vet.

My boy did the same. I went to collect him from the field one day and he had dried blood all over his nose and face, a couple of days two massive lumps appeared on his nose. Even though it wasn't hot or sore to the touch I called out the vet who said that he had damaged the skull where it joins. He said the swelling will go away but expect it to take up to 18 months. That was nearly a year ago and they have reduced to just under half the size.

Sorry I don't know a horse that has broken its nose, although I guess a lot of people (especially rugby players!) do and it doesn't affect them other than cosmetically. I just had to post though to say how gorgeous that picture is Spring Feather. :)

I read that wrong :D ... but yes I know a few people whose horses have broken their nose. Not me fortunately, I got away with two black eyes.

There is a horse at our yard who has broken his nose. Been on box rest for a while, and did it in the stable. Healing now, and although a big lump, doesn't seem to bother him.

The lump is a bit lower down than the horse in Spring Feathers photo.

I did too. Knew a girl whose horse broke her nose or rather they broke her nose with a combined effort. Over-exaggerated jumping position and over-exaggerated lifting of bonce over the fence = lots of blood and unconscious rider lolloping off the horse. She came round on the way down, stuck out an arm to save herself and did her collar bone too!

My big horse got kicked in the face right between the eyes and fractured his skull! Vet thought best to leave well alone and that was three years ago, he still has big lumps where the bone remodelled but no adverse effect - other than it probably rules him out of showing classes !!
Vet thought he was lucky as it was pretty much the spot to euthenase a horse !!
