On christmas day I went down with flu :( Had to try to soldier on as I was cooking the turkey but have since collapsed in heap and am lying in bed with my 2 cats. Anyway I've also got Neuralgia which is just about the most painful thing I've ever experienced - its shooting nerve pain on your face/head. I'm struggling to find a painkiller that will touch it. Just wondered if anyone had had it and what you took. Also how long it stayed!!

Oh and the boiler broke on christmas eve, all in all its not been a good christmas :(

Yes, I've had this, it is extremely painful and you will struggle to find an ordinary painkiller that will even dent the pain.
I went to my doc in the end and he prescribed carbamazepine. After increasing the dose the pain finally went away - what a relief that was! I had to finish the course of tablets and see if it came back. It didn't and touch wood I have not had it again.

Yes and I feel for you. I have suffered from Trigeminal Neuralgia twice, the first time I was in ACU for 3 nights after a trip in an ambulance to A&E - no normal painkillers can help the pain without the help of drugs that open the neural pathways, I ended up on Oxycotin and Oxycodone with mophine alongside. After 2 induced labours, I can easily say the Neuralgia is by far the worst pain I have ever experienced :(

Trip to your doctor would be the first place to request the correct meds to bring it under control xx

Oh that's interesting, thank you. I've only got every day painkillers like neurofen and paracetamol and they don't have any effect at all. Think maybe I'll try to see the doc tomorrow as this is quite astonishingly painful!

Gosh poor you, that sounds horrendous! It is so darn painful, cant sleep as the shooting pains come thick and fast

Yes, it is horrible. When I've experienced neuralgia, it has been part of an allergic reaction. My advice also would be to go to the doctor asap and until then try to get some Syndol from the chemist. This is a muscle relaxant (to the point that it sends some people to sleep) and might help.

My OH suffers from it a lot...he has seen both doctor and dentist and they said grin and bear it. Poor man doesn't know what to do with himself when it comes on, but it does get better after half an hour and a lot of swearing! He is not a wuss so I know it must be painfull.

I get it after being out in the cold or when it is windy, I just take painkillers and it usually goes off after a while. I try to keep my face covered with a scarf/neckwarmer thing when I'm out doing horses which does help. Horrible thing though.

Oh you poor soul !!

i have suffered from Trigeminal Neuralgia 3 times it is a horrific pain! .. it is known as the suicide pain , and us that have suffered from it will understand that .

Only Amitriptyline has ever worked for it with me . good god What a Relief when it kicks in !!

And another thing HORSES can suffer from this aswell , ive posted this before on here , if for any reason your horse becomes headshy for an unknown reason this could be the cause !!

Sorry to hear that, it's suppose to be an extremely intense pain. Over the counter painkillers won't do much for you unfortunately, but do see your doctor, he should be able to prescribe something stronger.

My mum has suffered from it for decades but found huge relief from acupuncture. The last session helped her stay pain free for about 15 years, although unfortunately it's not working as well with the current crisis.

My poor poor dad has now suffered with this in its most chronic form for 18 months. He is under a specialist at the hospital takes endless pills and as even had injections directly into the nerves in his face. Nothing seems to work and anything from washing his face, blowing his nose, brushing his teeth, talking, putting his glasses on can trigger an attack. I would do anything to help him. He has had brain scans etc I could go on. I feel so so sorry for him. However it is worse during the winter and he now covers his face to try and keep the nerves warmer. Sorry i can't suggest anything but I have seen first hand just how debilitating this can be.

Do mention accupuncture to him, you never know. My mum was similar, totally debilitated by it and the drugs she was on lowered her white cell count so she had to stop them immediately. She tried the accupuncture in complete desperation and without thinking it would work, but it did. Her only other option at the time was killing the nerve which leads to partial face paralysis and is not a pleasant option.

Thank you - I will defintely do so - my dad has to keep having blood tests due to the problems caused by the drugs he takes - so far they are keeping him on the drugs however they are looking into other possible lines of treatment. Just hope something works.

My dad has suffered with it for 20 years. Three of four ops, a couple of heart attacks brought on by it, he still suffers but thankfully it is not like it was ... for the time being. At its worst, had euthenasia been legal I would have signed the form. It is an evil, painful (undescribable) condition, at its mildest very painful at its worse excrutiating beyond words.

He has had all kinds of treatments and ops. Unfortunately the ops don't seem ever lasting and do cause some degree of numbness. I wouldn't say paralysis on his part but definitely numbness. Anthing could trigger his episodes, even swallowing and at its worst, when being treated in hospital, the administration of his morphine and other pain reliefs, even to a touch by a nurse would trigger it, literally his eyes were glassed over with fear waiting for the pain to come ... and it did.

Obviously, he has had it very badly but that is my experience of it.

Get to your doctor and get some pain relief sorted and if diagnosed ideally a consultant at your hospital on speed dial.

Never had it, thank God, but a late friend of mine did. A specialist told him that on the 1-10 pain scale it was up there at the top, along with childbirth. I am SO sorry, and I do hope some of the suggestions other people have posted on here help you.
