Anyone ever treated a Horse with a quater Crack?

My Horse has a quater crack you can see the crack at the top of the hoof and goes in a straight line down to about mid way - then you can see a groove under the hoof wall that then goes all the way to the bottom of the hoof!

Vet Hot poulticed the crack for three days and nothing came out so the Farrier trimmed the feet and pulled his toes right back... vet disagrees and said the crack should be grooved out

Farrier wants bar shoes on him - vet doesnt want bar shoes on him! He is slightly lame...

Anyone ever treated one - what did you have done?
 
I'd agree with both of them - ideally cracks do want to be debrided and grooved, and depending on its depth and extent maybe stabilised with acrylic. I would say that bar shoes are a very sensible idea also to try and improve stability across the crack. Shoeing with a clip either side of the crack can also be quite useful.
I would suggest you try and get your vet to come out next time your farrier is there, or vice versa. If they can speak to each other face to face then it will probably be much easier to have a unified plan of action.

Done a fair few - never needed to shoe or fill with putty. Just a decent diet, suitable living conditions and regular trims.
 
Thank you for all the replies re this! Finally took him to RVC where the farrier dressed the foot - put a round shoe on his floated it and added a hoof patch!

Got to go back in 4 weeks time - fingers crossed it works!
 
I would take shoes off, take toes back and flare if they were long and cut time between trims and ensure a good roll over kept on the hoof

I personally would use filler as it can force it wider
