Hi, I think my horse may be allergic to the stuff my rugs have been washed in. For the last three years he's been coming out in itchy spots on his body where the rug goes. He's not too hot, its not a feed allergy, nothing else changes in his routine other than the rugs.

Has anyone experienced this? I'm not sure what to do as I can't use any of my big rugs, he's in a lw at the moment that fits in my washer. Can you get hypoallergenic rug washing stuff? What would you do?

i used to be allergic to biological washing powder, would bring me out in itchy lumps and spots so it is possibly that your horse suffers the same!
does he still get it with the lightweight which you wash?
If not can you get a summer sheet and wash it then have him wear that under all his other rugs as a kind of liner?

Years ago a friend of mine had that problem. She tried everything, he was allergic to fabric conditoners too.

She ended up using baby shampoo or something similar, it didn't actually get her stuff very clean but the horse was lump free.

I'm sure these days there will be something as a lot of people have this problem too.

She had to wash and reproof all of her rugs herself. The local laundrette were not very pleased :D
