hey all,

am thinking about feeding straw with haylage to some of my porkers(LOL):D, and was wondering if anyone else does this? if so what type of straw do you feed etc?

I was always told that it can cause colic if they eat it so always use wheat straw or shavings foor bedding as they don't eat these?

many thanks in advance.

The Welsh section C gets only straw as he is such a fat thing and gets fat just by looking at food but he still needs forage and Hattie who is a rare good doer TB, gets a mix of straw and hay (2 flakes of straw, 2 flakes of hay) in her net. I feed a good quality oat straw and both look really well and shiny on it!

Both have good teeth that get done regularly but I probably wouldn't feed an oldie straw though.

Yes me. Doesn't have to be oat straw but that is very good if you can get it. I give mine 3 flaps of hay at night and he beds down on straw which he eats when he finishes his hay. If it's a fresh bed he will actually eat that first!!! Lol!!!

Yes I have always encouraged the barley straw eating!

We are lucky to have the straw that newmarket use-gorgeous and the neds love it!

I don't think I would use if neds didn't have daily turnout though as impactions happen this way

Not yet but my farmer has some barley straw with grass undersow (like a grass sandwich) which he's keen for me to try. Will defo give it a whirl once my haylage runs out

I do, oats and barley straw - I haven't been very successful with it, because the fussy beggers are not that keen:rolleyes:

I thought Captain was the only one, he is the only horse on our yard that won't eat straw. We sometimes add straw to his net for the first net after he colics, he picks it out and dumps it on the floor
