Has anyone been out to Ireland and brought back a nice cheap horse they maybe saw saw on this website or just went to Cavan or Goresbridge sales or just bought privately?
If so what are the pitfalls, probems, benefits etc?
I really like to know your experiences good or bad.

Also any one have an idea what the ferry crossing price is from Larne to Stranraer for horsebox with cargo?

Now thinking of talking a trip out next Spring, for a look around.

I'm from Ireland and had a horse brought over from England. The ferry price was something like £240 one way but I got an Irish transporter to bring him over for £200 in a shared load. Cheapest quote I had from an English company was £450

There's some total rubbish on DoneDeal and some really good horses too - so be careful, but it's not impossible to grab a bargain. I wouldn't bother bringing a lorry over tbh, I'd go with a transporter (much cheaper and less hassle, unless you are buying a lorry load

) particularly if you buy from a sale.

I've bought several from Cavan, and the same applies, if you know what you are about and don't get sucked in by the chat, there's no reason you can't pick up some very nice horses. Prices are still subdued atm, but good horses are still fetching a fair bit.

There are some really nice horses under 3,000 euros on there. Suppose its the equivalent of advertising in 'free ads' over here.

Costs £30 per metre to take a lorry or car/trailer over. Doesn't make a difference whether it's laden or not - space is at more of a premium on a ferry than weight.

Transporters are approx £250 or 300 eu for reputable ones - only way you could make it worthwhile would be if you brought a lorry load back.

Be wary of the horses - the Irish definition of "quiet" is not necessarily the same as the English one! Just because a horse has hunted over there, doesn't mean it'll hunt in England - very important to find out which pack as the country varies hugely - some packs never jump anything other than banks and drains, so the horses don't tend to jump out of canter (but are very surefooted!)

Buying at the sales gives some degree of safety and comeback with regard to vices/behaviour. If you buy privately, go with your eyes open - once a horse has been shipped to England, it's unlikely to be shipped back .....

There are straight people in England and Ireland - equally there are dodgy ones both sides of the water too!

The market is pretty dead over there (some cheap horses at Goresbridge this time) but the rubbish will be sold first, before the good stuff.....

Thanks for the feedback Everyone!!!
Miss_Bird do you have any recommendations or places to avoid?

I guess really the situation is like anywhere else, "Buyer Beware". But I couldn't help but noticing some lovely IDs at very reasonable prices and thats what I am after.

Think we will take a trip out anyway.
The views and the whiskeys are good too.................
