Oh and I are seriously considering a move.
At the moment we are in Derbyshire, the first idea was to move somewhere near Wisbech.
my parents are in Norfolk, and for a long time i have wanted to be closer to them.
OH has a friend in Wisbech who has said he could sort him a job.
BUT............
I have always, (and so would it seem has OH) wanted to be in Ireland. My roots are there and although i have never been, something calls me there. His folks have a holiday cottage over there.
Would we be mad to consider such a big step??

We are thinking of somewhere near Cavan

opinions please

I've got roots in Ireland too - albeit distant ones and when we went a few years ago I was quite excited. But it was not what I expected, it rained the whole time, it was realllllly poor, not nearly as much history in the place as england has, it wasn't beautiful, the people got on my nerves... Basically the holiday was a very depressing one! Some people love Ireland, just turns out I don't.
Don't go there expecting it to be lovely - you won't get let down then! Now I've said this you'll probably love it, and I'll probably get lots of PMs from Irish people telling me how rude I am, so I'm sorry in advance!

Ireland is fabulous in terms of horses, lots of competitions. I like Northern IReland personally , but then I've lived there all my life! Depends if you have kids, the irish education system isn't great I don't think

I've only visited Ireland once. I went Sligo on the Northwest Coast, it was lovely but it did rain ALL the time, and this was in August.

Am planning another a trip in the Spring to buy a new horse and will probably time my visit with the Cavan sales.

Good luck with your move if you decide to go, wish my OH could be uprooted !

Ok well IM born and bred here so quite hard to comment as it all I know!!!

However I always thought our education system was one of the better ones in comparion to other countries????

The education system is well rounded, from any six subjects you choose for LC you can do any course based on what points you get barring a few that have requirements for Higher level maths. So your second level subjects do not predetermine your third level ones.

I was born in Ireland and have lived here all my life. I lived in Co. Kildare until the age of 5, IMO it's the best county to be in if you're into horses, as there are many DI, EI, and SJAI venues in Co. Kildare and surrounding counties, and the hunting is also brilliant! At the moment I live in Co. Tipperary, there aren't that many DI venues within an hour and a half... there are a few EI and SJAI venues within a hour and a half of where I live though. The hunting is fantastic as well in Tipperary

I agree with Tharg in that the leaving cert has alot of advantages. All of my irish friends have done this and although you do not go into the subjects in as much detail you have a much broader education in 6th form as you do alot more subjects. this suits those who are good at alot of subjects and also those who dont know what to specialise until degree level. however the alevel system suits those wanting to narrow down early on. both have their advantages. the irish system can not be said to be not very good tho as in fact its advantages often outway the alevel system.
university wise, trinity college and university college dublin are as good as any of the top uk universities. theres also UCG and UCC. there are alot of other good colleges here too-Queens University Belfast is also very strong.

Having been in Ireland for a few weeks, life over there is certainly a little different to over here in England.

No signposts on country roads for a start (real bug bear been lost so many times).

Beer is cheaper yet spirits are more expensive (well there were where i was anyway!)

People are nice, but beware Irish males.... they are odd, very odd!

Ah yes the roads are crap... huge potholes every where, or if not pot holes blooming road works on the N7 and the N25 grrrrr

Interesting - I am based not too far from Wisbech and love it where I am now (moved up from Kent 4 years ago) but have very strong connections with Ireland.

My father was Irish & all his family are in Dublin and Meath.

My husband is Irish (N.Ireland) and all his family are still over there.

Ireland is a beautiful country, the people are lovely, everyone is pretty laid back, no rushing about, I found people really enjoy life over there, the social life is fabulous - life comes first, work etc 2nd.

My husband would move back there tomorrow & I've always said I'd probably retire there. My only bug bear with Ireland is the weather. It seems to rain constantly & I think it would depress me too much. Every time hubby's family ring & you ask about the weather - it's grey and miserable (could just be where they live though). We lived in N.Ireland for a couple of years about 10 years and it was lovely.

Follow your heart if that's what you want to do, you're only here once. It's only a couple of hours away. If it doesn't work out - it's not like it's Australia. You will have a ball.

Land and property isn't as cheap as it used to be, do you need to work? If so you could get someone to send you over some local papers with jobs to see salaries etc.

try the M50 at rush hour, especially by the red cow roundabout...what is going on there!!
i drove down the N7 to limerick yesterday and yes it was a bumpy ride!! at least we r going somewhere tho, not like on the M50 where you could get out set up and tent and cook a full 5 course dinner while u wait in the same spot in a damn queue!! bloody roadworks.

Don`t forget UL, lot of money poured into that one. Don`t know about the rest of that college but the music section is amazing.

Lived in northern ireland all my life! lol

armagh is a good area to be in, as there are plenty of hunts and comps going on. plus is near cavan!
