Hi, one of our pony really struggles with spring grass so have to restrict / muzzle - does anyone have any not allowed grass at all - do they adapt and can they still be ridden etc, thanks
PM maggiesmum on here. She has a horse who is kept off grass in a "sin bin" dirt patch over spring/summer due to intolerance. He's fed adlib haylage in his "patch". Gets him out and about and stretching his legs.
Just wondering if they can still be ridden on grass / go to shows etc or whether it sends them in a paddy - thankfully ours still gets to go out all be it with a muzzle in spring but he is not happy about his restriction!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My daughters' ponies are muzzled and on restricted grazing over Spring/Summer. They both go to PC rallies etc on grass and it doesn't affect them at all.
I just make sure to not allow them to graze if we're parked on long grass, otherwise they decide they'd rather not go home!
Do you put any long stem forage out for your to munch on? I believe long fibre is paramount to a healthy gut, therefore I tend to feed haylage in the field every day over summer, just a smallish amount, to help their guts along.
