My boy has a lump in the girth area. Don't think it was there last night and certainly wasn't on Sunday(Last time I saw him in daylight). It's the size of a very large fly bite but hard and round and the skin moves freely over it. It doesn't seem to hurt him. Any ideas please?

Forum police please note - I will be consulting my vet if it doesn't go away, and will treat all advice from forum members with suitable caution!

Oh gosh I never thought of that. He's always had the same type of girth and I wash it every week. How do I treat it? It's not raw. I better get a girth sleeve. I last rode Tues. He rolled in sand on Sun. Do you think that could have got under the skin and caused it.

Well, if you havnt changed anything and he hasnt changed weight, doubt if it would be a girth gall (could be wrong). Are you putting anything on it? If it doesnt go down within a couple of days, I would get the vet to have a look.

On the off chance (as not much info at hand), as he ever suffered with sarcoids/warts?

Thanks for your help Llwyncwn. no haven't put anything on it as seems to be under skin and all hair is still in place. Yes he has had sarcoids but they didn't look like this, but i suppose it could be a different type. if it hasn't gone by Monday I will get vet out.

Hi,
Just saw your post thought i would put your mind at rest. One of my horses [a heavy cob mare] has three lumps on her back and the hair has come off, she has had them about a year now. They are painless as you can squeeze bash and prod them with no re-action. I had the vet out twice and his advice was to leave them alone unless they bleed or become painfull, told me they were more of a problem to me than the horse. He was 99% certain they were collagen necrosis lumps [dead cells]. I have tried every potion known to mankind which the vet found very humerous as he said the only way to get rid of them was surgery but sometimes they just spontaneously disappear. I have been riding this mare almost daily and she does not seem the least bit bothered, but i must admit they look hellish. As an aside she did have sarcoids as well but they have now gone i think some nags are just susceptable to these skin problems and there aint nothing you can do about it. As the horse is not worried i have stopped worrying as well.
Hope this makes you feel a little better.

thanks - my instructor's just had a look and says it's just a harmless cyst like thing, not to worry, just show it to a vet next time one is at the yard but no urgency.
