I have never actually seen a horse waxed up and was wondering whether anyone had any pictures of when their mares had their foals so I have more of an idea as what to look for.

I have images of candles (the pink and white striped ones

) hanging from her udders at the moment

I thought that too... I assumed the whole teat would be waxed up for some reason. I didn't think it was just small droplets like that. I am going to have a look when I go back in a few hours.

Her poo is loose and she is very calm... Her boobies are absolutely massive and rock hard all the way to the top of her leg really. She has not waxed up yet (although I have been looking for the wrong thing

) or running milk, but I am going to check on her tonight at 9pm and then again at 11pm. I will go again if she looks as though she is restless and starting to get ready.

The other day she had lots of strange movement in the bottom of her belly that a friend suggested could have been her having small contractions as it was very regular and very strange.

She is really fed up though and is quite grumpy today.

Both excellent pictures of waxing up.

The loose poo is probably a sign that she is uncomfortable, i.e foalie could be moving to get into birthing position.

Fingers crossed that she'll hold on until you get the alarm but don't go far away now!

I'm so excited for you........keep reporting back!

Thanks Bananaman... I think we have a few more days, but I am going to do a few checks on her tonight as I wouldn't forgive myself if I missed it. She is being very quiet, but does not want to be fussed which is not like her.

Okay I am going to sound really stupid, but I didnt know the foaling season was now, or isn't it?!

Never had any experience of foals or foaling as you can probably tell lol.

Good luck with everything! x

Some mares don't wax up at all, so don't count on it! Some get a slightly swollen udder, others grossly swollen.
Some literally drip milk 12 to 24 hours prior to foaling, others ust go ahead and drop them without warning..
We find the most imminent sign of foaling is general restlessness, because ours foal outside later in the year you always see them slink off a few times during the day to choose their spot.
Once they start they sweat profusely, so that's how the foaling alarms work, a rise in body temp. I suppose you could keep taking her temp so you get familiar with what's normal for her?
Just don't rely on her udder warning you, it may not....

Thanks henryhorn... I'll keep that in mind. She is being quite quiet at the moment, doesn't seem to restless though, but will go up tonight to check on her again.
