Any creative types out there?

I need a mounting block to leave on my drive so can hack out when OH isn't there to shut drive gate for me.

Problem is drive is on side of road easy to pull up and theive things from (paranoid..... little old me.....never) so my lovely wooden block is no use, neither is a plastic one.

I did think of using a full water carrying tub, but the drive is not very stable as is stones rather than solid paving, and then......my little mind gave up!

So anyone else out there have this problem? What do you use that isn't easily nicked?

Oh, and it can't be a perminant (sp) structure as house only rented

Introduction to the chaps at 'Horses in Hunters' to the winner!!!:D

Teach your horse to move sideways towards you when you lift your whip above your head. Then sit on the gate, lift your whip up and horse will present itself for mounting. That's what I do anyway as I haven't got a mounting block.

We have old caravan steps that have not been stolen, but only on a country lane.

We also have a concrete block that was made by filling a bucket with concrete. We didn't find that very practical as you have to get your horse in just the right place so that you can use it.

Can you have something you just carry out and use and then take in after your hack? That would reduce the time it is available to pinch?

Or have a plastic one attached to a piece of chain padlocked to something?

We used a large lump of tree - a section through the trunk with a step chainsawed in. Too heavy for anyone to move without a forklift at least. Depends how big your gateway is?

Could you nail a style/type step to the gate so you could close gate then step up and mount from there?

We have a fixed mounting block in our school - its basically a big fat plan nailed diagonally across one corner of the school...works well enough!

I taught my 17hh IDx to bow so I can get on in the field, I also taught him to stand still next to something I can climb on

For a while I would climb on the field gate to hop on him to put him away at night, as he was so keen to get his dinner he'd move sideways for me, I did have to watch out for being squished occasionally!

What a well behaved horse!!

Unfortunately the gate is really rubbish (hence not just shutting gate when mounted and toddling off) so the moving sideways and step on gate ideas are out.

Liking the breeze block, milk crate or tire ideas think I might need to trawl ebay....

If we owned the place a nice log made into mounting block would be lovely too, ideas for the future perhaps!! :D

Why not buy a motorbike chain and lock your plastic or wooden mounting block to the fence or gate? A mounting block isn't highly nickable so should be ok.

Or cement together a few breeze blocks but don't fix them to the ground.

Why don't you get a nice smart permanent one made from bricks and mortar?

We have a nice one like that on the yard and its very pretty with a planter either side you wouldn't really know what it was until you saw someone use it, and good luck to anyone nicking it!

please don't use a milk crate, i've heard of really horrible injuries when horse spooked and stepped into one...
a big hefty slice/chunk from a tree trunk works perfectly and looks nice and rustic, go to local woodyard and ask for a 3' long (or whatever height you want it to be) slice from a big hefty tree. i had 1 at my last place and it was a perfect mounting block. nearly broke the suspension on my little car getting it home though, prob worth paying to get it delivered!

We all use fences or gates, I accidentally taught my horse to move closer when I got my foot in the stirrup though (away when I clamber up, then moves in) and he did it when I was on a flimsy mounting block and knocked me off backwards today so be careful teaching your horse helpful habits!! Hes a clever devil though so Im sure he did it deliberatley :p

another plea for not using a milk crate, friends normally quiet horse had a loony turn when she was about to get on a put foot in it then panicked and caused alot of damage to his leg. it never came right unfortunately......:(

Ekk, maybe not milk crates then!!

Breeze blocks perhaps seem most stable, and easy to take with us when we move.

Would love a nice rustic log one, or a proper cemented brick one, one day when own my own house maybe!

The block needs to look like junk that no one wants randomly dumped on the drive. Had a recycling bin nicked (food waste one) which is why am not wanting to leave annything to nice on drive!

An old wooden chair, someone always has one kicking around or you could pick one up for a few pounds from a carboot.

I am quite fond of mine so I have painted my postcode on mine despite it being so manky and weather beaten so no-one would want it!

Glued together milk crates, who's going to want to pinch that?! :D

Want to bet?
Friends of mine put a load of fruit and veg on an old battered table with a notice saying "Please help yourselves'

They returned a couple of hours later to find all the bags of goodies neatly piled on the floor and the table gone!
