Anyone got any tips for getting rust off buckles?

A good rub with metal polish should help as it is slightly abrasive, or even some v fine sand paper if it is bad. If the piece if tack attched to the buckle is good, but the buckles are really shot then you could get your saddler to replace them with nickle ones (stainless steel ones will go rusty in time).

I thought nickel horse kit was unusual these days? I've still got some nickel bits but won't use them as someone told me they can snap? Or was I imagining that lol :)

Lol, sorry, you're right, I got them the wrong way round!! You'll have nickle buckles (usually plated to make them shiney and silver) but you'll want stainless steel ones - they should be standard with your saddler. Nickle are cheaper which is why you still find them on tack.
