Anyone got horses fully clipped still out 24/7?

I gave my daughter's mare a full clip yesterday and she has a MW with neck cover on at night and put LW on today as it was so warm and sunny! Ours are hopefully going to be out until mid Nov! I actually think it is warmer for them to be out as they are moving around! I'm going to give my mare a full clip later in the week as her chaser clip has nearly grown out! Both our mares are cob x's and good doers who really don't seem to feel the cold! I only put heavy weights on them for the weeks that we had snow, below freezing temps last year!
 
I have my fully clipped Shetland out with a light weight (no neck yet) and a fleece on underneath at night. He's warm enough just now but I do add a neck if the weather is due to be bad.

I plan on fully clipping my pony at some point this week when he is dry enough and in the right mood to stand still enough!! He'll wear a medium weight once he's done.

Not sure when I will have to bring my horses in for winter as we're still in our summer paddock which is holding up really well! :D
 
My mare is a cob X percheron, she had a low trace, tapered to just behind the girth (so front half of a low trace really) about 5 weeks ago. She is still living out naked and isn't bothered at all. The clip has grown out quite a bit and she's very fluffy, so she'll be having a full trace done in the next 2 weeks at some point, and rugged up then with a 200g fill. Last winter she lived out 24/7 with a full clip, legs and all, in a MW full neck turnout. When it was really bad weather I chucked a standard neck 100g turnout over the top of her MW at night. She even put weight ON that winter even though I only fed her a token handful of chaff once a day and an armful of hay! I love my low maintainence pony! I also hunt with someone who's cob had a hunter clip back in september and is still out unrugged. X
 
Mine lives out all year, she is fully clipped for hunting and is currently out in a 200g rug with full neck day and night. She is a good doer but perfectly happy in that at present.
 
Fully clipped ISH with MW with neck on out 24/7. He's absolutely fine, if not a little warm sometimes. Access to extra hay on a daily basis and to be honest is better out than in as he'd just fret and be silly. He's a warm boy and was sweating far too much when I rode, so now i don't risk him chilling when I finish riding.

I was always taught that if they had enough good food, good rugs and some natural shelter, they'd be fine. 20 years of doing pretty much just that and my guys have always been fine. If it ain't broke.......
 
My fully clipped TB is out...though he does have a fleece, medium weight turnout and a lightweight full neck on over the top of that.
 
yes! my mare (sec D x) was fully clipped for hunting last season. hates being in so lived out quite happily in the depths of winter (i think -17 was our record). she wore 2 fairly heavyweight turnout rugs with neck and then a thin one on top. took ages for her clip to grow out so she can't have been too nippy!
 
Just hogged and bib clipped my cob and shes out naked 24/7 and warm as toast :)
I may need to do a slightly higher clip (trace clip) and will see how she gets on without a rug - if she is cold then will put her in a 200gram TO :)

My TB is rugged up in her MW with neck as she did drop weight a bit, but yesterday it was so warm that she was naked in the afternoon :) the weight has crept back on her now since shes warmer and i have upped her feed to barley & sugarbeet :)
 
Have one out tonight clipped out, legs the lot, in a middleweight with no neck, and a pile of haylage. He's cubbing in the morning, and can be a bit hot, so I'll see what sleeping out does for him!
 
Mine has been in at night since she had laminitis in June (think that must be a new low for us) but she's fully clipped and out in the day with no rug on and only a thermatex at night. Well, until today when I left it over a gate 'to air', went to visit my parents and drove back down the motorway in the horrid rain thinking about the rug still hanging over the gate and the baldy pony in the field. Still, turns out the baldy pony is more waterproof than the rug as she was quite happy (tough little welshie) and the rug decidedly less so. She did have to wear her quilt tonight though.
 
i must be hard some of mine are hunter clipped and out 24/7 and still in rain sheets. none of them are cold (yes i have been down to check on them late at night) the shetland is hunter clipped too as he just gets too hot and sweaty if left in his woollies (which would be immense by now!!) tho he is only on max 4 hrs turnout as grass is so green. he doesnt even own a rug and will be rugless all winter. For those of you in MW/layers already what will you do when its -20?
 
Yep! TB fully clipped but for saddle patch, legs & half head. He had his rug off completely today as it was warm. However - typically in MW half neck. He is a very hot horse, and has been much happier in himself since clipping again on Sunday. He is out all year - day & night - just rug him appropriately for his needs. He is a good doer. :)
 
Mine is only in a light M/W at night and then LW during the day! I am saving warmer M/W for colder weather and then H/W only goes on for freezing conditions! I am always changing rugs over depending on weather as I hate over rugging with a passion! I only put rugs on when they are clipped! I never understand putting a rug on a hairy native or keeping the same rug on regardless of whether it is milder/ colder weather!

I can honestly say that in all the years I've been around horses (21 years) I've very, very rarely seen a horse cold that's been wearing a rug. I've seen the odd one that has actually been shivering dramatically but they tend to be the skinny TB type that have managed to get absolutely soaked through and stood in the field waiting to come in and got chilled. I think we tend to over rug horses, I think we all do it at some point me certainly!!

I think we tend to forget they have fur coats (even when clipped).
 
Clipped my cob about 3 weeks ago and she's still out 24/7. Shock horror - with nothing on! Put a l/w on her and she was sweating up underneath it so for now she's naked! I do pop a l/w if its set to rain all day but currently its showers and then sunny and warm and she gets too hot!
 
Fabio's fully clipped and lives out all year! He's only in a 100g LW at the moment and is still toasty! Just bought him a snuggy jams rug as an under rug but may have to put his no fill sheet on over it. He's always warm though, without being fully clipped in winter he sweats up so much in work. He did even with a blanket clip.
 
ISH has trace clip and in a LW in day and naked at night - (she is in though)
NF pony also has a trace clip, hes in normally naked in the day unless its horrible then he gets a LW. then at night if its really bad he wil have a MW or a LW normally.
Retired cob has a trace clip due to cushins. hes naked in day and lw stable rug at night as hes kept in.

My TB is out fully clipped (legs and face left on) In a heavy weight rug. She won't be brought in at all this winter due to us having fantastic natural shelter and she has an extra heavy weight TO. She did the same last year and was fine :)
 
yes, fully clipped mine 3 weeks ago, during the heatwave !!! he lives out 24/7 fully clipped and rugged anyway. he is still only in med weight at the moment with the neck on for night time. it is still soo warm out, plan to reclip him at the weekend as it has grown back a bit already!
 
Sorry haven't read thread and lunch over - mine fully clipped last year, out 24/7 all winter. We are in Aberdeenshire (-23) so pretty hardcore. He was absolutely fine and no coat in February still which made me feel like such a witch :eek::eek:. Was well rugged though, plus adlib haylage which is the key IMO.
 
Yep mine is fully clipped, in just a lightweight with a fly sheet underneath. Im glad to read this thread as well, as I was getting worried I was being mean too! He seems very happy though and toasty, we have tonnes of grass left as well! Good times!
 
Yep full clip (legs on mind you) and out in a MW 24/7. Though to be honest I've only put the extra 100g liner in making the rug a MW this evening.

Snap - we have a cob x percheron too. Ours is out naked with a blanket clip and will be clipped again in the next week or so as she is getting hairy already. She has a lightweight on at night if it rains or the forcast is cold and in the realy cold weather she will have a medium weight on, possibly with a neck at night. She is another who managed to get fatter last winter!
