anyone had a dog with juvenile hip dysplasia?

no i am gonna wait till xmas when i do my placement at a small animal practice too see if I like them as I currently am not going to my current practice as it has been taken over and I really REALLY don't like the new owners!!!

I am gonna bring him in for a full physical and x-rays if deemed necessary (I think I would actually rather they were done just so I have piece of mind!) Don't really care about cost I will find a way to cover it (plus he is insured!)

Its just he is still occasionally lame/stiff for 30 seconds on his left hind when risen after lying on a hard surface for a period of time! but if I rub it/massage it, or leave him to walk it off for a few seconds he goes back to 100% normal! but obv the rising is NOT normal and this is what is worrying me.
My lecturers all seem to think it will be joint related so I will be getting it checked.

I just wanted to know if other people had had this problem and what signs they noticed to see if beau has any of them, or whether it might be something different (not sure whether I want it to be or not! Id rather it not be a problem, or at least a problem I can handle, rather than a problem I don't know about!)

Stupid dogs and their stupid problems!

As you have replied on your other post, he is 18 months so old enough for the x-rays. They need to be scored properly - I might look at an x-ray and think 'good/bad' but only proper scoring will determine it.
It is not about like or dislike, the plates have to be submitted to a professional who will give a score and then you will know for definite either way. Just feeling the area or looking at him is no guarantee.

ye, well I think lecturers were just saying to do full physical to ensure there is no other underlying cause which is not related to joints so I am not unneccesarily exposing him to radiation (strongly focussed on on a veterinary course! lol) but yes if i get them done and there is not obvious laxity, rotation or degeneration they are off to a pro for scoring! It sounds stupid but im not interested in the score, more the diagnosis of yey or ney then how to treat it! as although I hate the idea of a femoral head and neck excision surgery, if thats what he needs to get better than by darn it thats what he will have! If I have to shell out for a hip replacement, il sell my car and do it!!!

Hopefully wont be as extreme as my imagination though

hehe

Its a bit of a bugger really as the surgery if he was younger is much different, and a higher success rate for normal life with normal anatomy (where they fracture the pelvis in 3 areas and realign everything to fit properly as it continues to grow and growth plates seal etc) but he is now too old for these so it ends up being salvage surgery if that is the best option! I just wish, if it is this, that I had been able to pick it up earlier! it feels worse as being a vet student I feel like I should be able to notice things and now I just feel a bit useless!

No I understand the score not being important, obviously if you look at them and think 'bloody hell!' then you will know, but if it looks a bit more ambiguous then the scoring will help.

In fairness if he does have HD, lots of dogs live full lives with no effect or can be managed through medication or, like you say, surgery.

(but you know that

)

It is a very hard thing to notice and TBH I wouldn't beat myself up if I were you, at this age, he is still only a baby in so many ways and it still could turn out to be anything.

one person said to me maybe he is just growing.......... I was like gosh would it be nice if its just that?!!!!

However, i doubt it (which sucks!)

I have put him back on JWB from Wagg to see if this helps in terms of nutrition. (You know this CC as we had a convo on trying skinners, they got back to me so will be checking their stockists shortly!
smile.gif
)

He is also currently getting Chondroitin, Glucosamine and cod liver oil tablets (as a combo, and he is being good as gold at taking them!
smile.gif
)

Im glad you think its not a terrible thing I didnt notice it! As I said though once he is stood up for like 30 seconds he becomes 100% normal! its just that 30 seconds when my heart stops and my stomach drops through my feet as I watch him walk on 3 legs!

Well I was convinced B had bladder cancer and it turned out to be a UTI (albeit a bad one!) they do like to worry us....

Do you find yourself looking at random people's dogs to check their gait and soundness and see if you can spot anything?! *Quick geek question* I do....

Agree with CC yet again, don't beat yourself up about noticing things, also with the fact that you do need x rays to diagnose HD. If you don't mind the journey our vet in cheshire is superb, they use a sedative not ga for x rays and he will give you an idea of score (within 5 and he is usually spot on) without having to submit to the bVA which saves you £60 plus. I have told the story on here before about my bitch with a score inthe 100s who led a full and active life, so if it is worst case scenario it is not the end of the world. In you shoes I would get him x rayed sooner rather than later if only to stop you imagining the worst.

Henry has mild HD, diagnosed by X-ray when he was 18 motnhs old. The Dogs Trust noticed he tended to bunny hop when he was running.

In his case, he has improved greatly for losing some flab - he was obese when he came from his last home

which I think made things worse by straining his joints. He is a now a slender spangle

He has one human cod liver oil capsule a day, in his breakfast. I am going to get some cod lover oil and glucosamine ones when the current pot is used up, again human ones. His gait is much better for being fit, he has nice muscly hind legs.

I don't encourage him to jump (not that he needs much encouragement!) and tend to lift him over stiles and things, and he sits in the back seat of the car because he can hop in in two stages, rather than leaping into the boot.

I do encourage him to swim, but he has his dog jumper to dry him off quickly, and I try not to let him get cold when he's wet.

He does lead a very active life, we go for long walks, he runs around, swims and plays with other dogs and they never seem to bother him a bit

Hope this helps x

Thanks guys yes it does help alot!

MM which vets in cheshire?? as if I am staying with my boyf he lives literally round the corner from Wright and MOrten (so if its them then I am sorted! hehe)

I am only at uni for one more week so its when I am done here it is off to the vets time!

Thank you for the good news bits on life is still feasible even if he is effected.

H_R Beau is exactly the same in terms of back seat of the car, he gets in in two steady stages, not leaping like a nutter, although he can jump into the boot if required (although I dont like getting him to do this as he is not well co-ordinated at the best of times!
grin.gif
)

he does also love his swimming now, which I am so happy about!
smile.gif
so Will keep encouraging him to do that! Also Beau is not overweight (or anywhere near overweight! I do well keeping him at "healthy weight" as he is just a bugger for not eating his dinner! He goes, nope playing is much more fun thank you!
smile.gif
)

I will keep him on the glucosamine tablets as well then until I find out exactly whats going on!

H_R, Beau is on human ones too! Tesco do a full combo tablet of Omega 3 Fish oil (cod liver oil basically) glucosamine and chondroitin all in one! They are super cheap but could be much more expensive I feel and its all the positive supplements in one!
smile.gif
Just to try to reciprocate the help!
grin.gif

Thank you guys it does make me feel better to know a) im not the only one who has this problem and b) that Im not totally bonkers for thinking it and c) not totally **** as an owner for not picking it up earlier! But as I say I will be willin to sell my spleen (if anyone is interested!
wink.gif
) if it means I get the money to be able to get him sorted!

hehe its ok I didnt think you were insinuating that (just making sure EVERYONE knew I keep my dog lean
grin.gif
not necessarily through choice sometimes but hey saves me stressing about weight issues!)

if you find them in tesco, my housemate also said Hollands and Barrets do the same tablet, so dont know if it would be cheaper or more expensive there (we dont have one here so I cant compare!)

Sorry not Wright and Morten (that would have been just too convenient wouldn't it). Hampton Vet Group at Malpas, nearer Shropshire/Welsh border. When I was there having Evie x rayed there was a breeder who had travelled from N Yorkshire with 3 akitas as she didn't want them to have a GA.

blinking heck that is a treck!!!

although I guess if ur vet (or hers!) wont just sedate and insists on GA its worth travelling if you dont want the risk!

yes W+M would just have been super convenient (darn u!)
smile.gif

Well he has had a decent walk today (including some swimming H_R please take note!
smile.gif
hehe) and he has come home lay down for numerous naps, and has got up fine! so cue me going YEY! and can guarantee next time he gets up now he will be lame!

I will look into the Hampton Vet group tho MM thank you! I will check with the practice I will be working at as well about whetehr they are willing to sedate rather than GA as I agree it is excessive with a calm dog to GA sometimes (unless safety reasons etc require it!)
