My mare was recently diagnosed with this problem. Our vet is not sure what has caused this but he did say the middle part of the oesophagus that seemed damaged was unlikely to recover. Since coming home my mare is fed two really sloppy feeds per day and she has access to haylage now as she can cope with it with no problems. She does occasionally cough or sneeze after her sloppy feeds but she is not distressed by this and just head off to her haylage nets. She occasionally has a nasal discharge sometimes white other times dark brown after these sneezes but it doesn't look like her feed although her feed is a dark brown. She seems to have a good appetite but not much of a whinny anymore due to this. She also used to trot down the fence line as soon as she saw our car coming but now she just plods about at a very slow walk. Its a real deliberate one foot in front of the other. She has been out once or twice since coming home just for a trek more than a hack and coped well. She is a little grumpy with the mini mares she shares her field with but its no more than a look before the get out her way. She has never bitten or kicked and still is lovely to handle but she just seems really dopey or depressed but as I say she does eat everything she is given happily so I am at a loss to know why she is so slow now. She gets regular physio and equine shiatsu which she had again recently but still she has not perked up. Does anyone have any ideas of what may be wrong.Could she be in pain?
