I am finally getting my foot fixed on the 6th February, yay! Problem is the first show of the season is the 30th March.

How realistic is it that ill be back in the saddle and jumping? I am having it broken and pinned so I am hopeful!

Anyone had this done and how long before you were riding again?

I have had some surgery, but it didn't go to plan. Had my toe broken and set, then plaster cast put on. 2 weeks later, I got a horrible skin infection and the cast had to be taken off. It never really set, although is better than it was. Took me about 6 weeks, although it should have taken a good 10 weeks.
Good luck.

Op, trying to remember but both mine done 20 yrs ago then one redone with no of pins approx 8 yrs later. All ops went fine really & rode in hospital sandal for a while which wouldn't look great competing!! Whatever we say u will have to play it by ear & listen to your feet :) not worth setting yourself right back for one comp. good luck

A friend of mine who is the local district nurse had hers done a couple of years ago. She suffered quite badly with them and was looking forward to having surgery to get her feet back to normal. She now says its the worst thing she's ever done and wishes she had left them well alone. Sorry i know its not what you want to hear but i think you should speak to people who have had it done to get a full understanding about it. Good luck and i hope your surgery goes better than my friends.

Yes I've had this surgery anout 2 years ago - you MUST keep the foot elevated for as long as you can, i literally rested for 4 weeks with it in the air and it was still quite swollen, i went back to work after 6 weeks after having surgery and it was probably a couple weeks too soon as it was still quite tender and swollen, it probably took another month to month and half til it wasnt feeling tender. I definitely dont think you'll be ready after about 7 weeks to compete in a show I'm afraid, I also play alot of netball and I was told I couldnt play for some months after for fear of dislodging the pins - you MUST let it heal properly and rest it otherwise it will have been for nothing.

I had both done a couple of years again. It is a fairly brutal procedure so don't underestimate how long it will take you to recover!

Had mine done last year (both at the same time!) was moving about happily on crutches within a week, feet in bandages not casts and was riding as soon as i could comfortably get boots on/off which wasn't long. It was actually a lot better than i expected, both broken and pinned, the most painful part was having the plastic stiches removed!

I had the hallux rigidus surgery, it's similar to bunion but is on top of the toe but same joint. Horrendous surgery and painful after, I had to wear a shoe thingy that stopped me bending my toe as it had been fixed with a plate. Must be similar to doing a bunion just a different place on the toe. Was so worth it in the end though, will not hesitate to have the other one done even though I know it's not exactly fun!

I had one foot done and arthritic bone taken off big toe (which they did not tell me about) was in plaster for three months. and I quote
the most painful part was having the plastic stitches removed!
Arghhh, it was the most excruciating pain in the world. Good luck but doubt you will be able to ride that soon.

Hope all goes well for you, I await your updates with interest having a massive bunion on each big toe and a "tailors bunion" on the little toe. I have been pondering having surgery but will let you be a guinea pig !

Thanks all. I've been umming and arring over it for a couple of years but the pain is too bad now, I cant get boots on and riding hurts. It is definitely time! Just hate the idea of being stuck at home useless, but I will do everything the doctor says and if it means I miss out on competing then so be it. Probably shouldn't have watched the you tube video of it though seeing as it is a local anesthetic...

You won't regret it. Local is fine, I was a bit of a wimp and allegedly needed enough local to knock out a horse or some such nonsense but once it's numb you really don't know anything and they put a screen up.

I have to say I would be very doubtful riding that soon - even less competing, as others have said. The biggest help is elevation even once you're back on your feet. Make sure you start your painkillers before the anaesthetic wears off too, I left it too late and woke up on the bathroom floor as it suddenly kicked in and I passed out. I found mine was extremely vulnerable to knocks and I went over on it across a door frame about 6 weeks after surgery -the pain!!! Just look after it. I have no pain now though and a foot which looks lovely and straight. I don't think I rode for about 12 weeks. Good luck!
