I'm looking at getting a little set up at home - 2 stables and feed room and have looked at redmire, marsh and chart. they all seem to be about the same price and wondered if anyone had any experience of them . Also very confused as been given quotes on ground work/bases that vary widely (2000 vs 5000 !) is going for a cheaper base a false economy ??

PM me as we have had a bespoke brand new American Barn system and I can warn you of one well respected company I won't be recommending!

Redmire built my yard and they were fab, the stables have been up 2 yrs Jan and no problems at all. Will definitely use them again.

Browns of Wem did mine two years ago and the stables are great. A little tip: get the stable company to liaise directly with the people doing your ground base so that they work to each other's specifications and if anything gets done wrong it is their problem!! (you don't want the stable to arrive only to find they don't fit the base and no one taking responsibility for the mistake!). For what it's worth we had 4 stables and the ground base cost £5,000.

I looked at Chart and Redmire and in the end managed to get a field shelter 24' long from a local chap which was a cancelled order and we got it converted to 2 stables with lovely full depth grill in the middle for £2,500 (but that was 5 years ago).

I live in Surrey, I bought mine from Oakley who at the time were in Dunsfold. I put my own stable base down, including the brick course. It saved me a lot of money.

The nice thing about Oakley is that when we wanted to add stables, we were able to order them and then drive over and collect the stables flat packed on our big trailer and then put them up ourselves. It saves a lot of money and it's not rocket science. All you need is two strong adults.

I rang round everyone in my area, Chart, National Stables, Haymac. Due to my horses particular size/issues decided to go for one company but when we finally got round to order, after 3 months, they wouldn't hold the price. Ended up getting local builder to make them so everything was as I wanted it and they are much better quality for the same price. Base we did with the builder its big 10m x 20m and cost nearly as much the stables!

ive got 2 Redmire Mobile field shelters -24'x12'. They erected them and we moved them around the field a few times, then this year we took them down (i say we, we paid 2 builder guys to do it for us) They put them back together at our new field, and they are still as great as they were when they came to be built the first time. They are 18months old now and are great.
WE have just had planning passed for some bigger stables and redmire will be used for those as well.

I reckon if you base cost on the baseworks+elec+water costing as much as the stables themselves, you wont go far wrong. Could be more (if remote from water or elec supply) or less (elec and water close by and site dry and level) but at least you wont have a heart attack.

We had a mini barn from Saltire stables recently but theyre not in your neck of the woods. We were pretty happy with it. And it hasnt blown down in the gales!

Out of interest (as I am thinking of building my own mini-yard on my in-law's land and then renting a hay field instead of using their land for our hay. How much did it cost people to put in a small hard standing/yard area, small amount of fencing and 20x40 school (husband would do the post and rail) as well as small timber stable block? Electric and water is quite close by as my in-laws live there, and the area is reasonably flat but would need concreting first. Another option for us is to use field shelters in their field and have a hard standing area outside the shelters. Water taps and electrics can then be fitted to the cow stall which is part of the main house. We'd still need the fencing and manege, but it cuts out the cost of the yard/stables.

We are thinking of getting a small mortgage to do this but not sure how much we'd need. Was thinking probably about 25k?

I had 2 stables put up 5 years ago from National Stables, excellent stables, excellent service, very professional. Still look lovely 5 years on. They worked with the ground work people (someone they recommended in my area). Yes, my groundwork was twice the price of my stables!

Last month ordered partitions for internal stables to go in existing brick barn. Bought those from Chart Stables. Ditto the above. No groundwork needed for these though. Very reasonably priced.
