As title really.

I have to get ankle surgery to remove a loose bit of cartilage from the joint. Doctor reckons 3 weeks, no driving and a few weeks on crutches but 2-4 months until back to normal.

My thoughts are riders are a little more resilient than most and being positive, I am hoping to be back on bored well before 2 months!

Anyone out there had keyhole ankle surgery and if so how where you after?

A horse rider taking a doctor's advice? Ha Ha Ha... Not many do IMO

I had plates and screws for broken tib/fib at ankle level and was on board the day after the cast came off. First physio session immediately after plaster removal as my ankle was frozen. Then back on :-)

I'm taking my consultants advice, under protest I must add. Suppose it depends on surgery, where , severity, horse, a whole host of factors. It is of course your choice to ride or not but if you could undo healing and end up back at square one it's not a risk worth taking, for me anyway.
If, god forbid, something was to happen don't know if you'd be covered for insurance purposes?

Thanks for the responses.

I will of course listen to my body, but on the other hand I think doctors have to be on the cautious side. If they are anything but, then they get a lot back on them.

I guess I will just have to wait and see, and keep my fingers crossed that I am back on for the eventing season!!

My horse is pretty good- she can be a little excitable but no badness so I would trust to get back on before up to full strength. However I would say I would need both stirrups.

Thanks

I had fibrous tissue removed from both my ankle joints a few years ago.....after each surgery I was told they wanted me walking on it as soon as poss, the crutches were only there for a guide while I was in a bit of pain.
with in three weeks I was back to nearly normal......I did have a sneaky snowy ride with seven stiches in my ankle but my surgeon treats a lot of jockeys so just said if it hurts don't do it.

where are you having it done?
