Two months after castration and my gelding has little red bit protruding out of one side of his op site. The vet is coming next week but wondered if anyone had any experience of remedies/ops and their success or failure?
Oh I don't like the sound of that, good that you are getting your vet out. We haven't had much problem with gelding TBH. One of my horses wasn't gelded until he was nearly five though and he is a big warmblood, and his testicles were like melons!
When he was gelded they had to do a little plastic surgery to make his ball bag's smaller or else he would have looked like he had spaniels ear's between his back legs!
My gelding had a very similar thing. It started with a fibrous hernia type thing poking through which started to get bigger. The vet came back and cut it off and stiched back up.
Without wanting to worry you, as I am sure this was a one off, but my horse must have caught the stiches with his tail and tore artery / vein (not quite sure - don't even think the vet quite knew) and the amount of blood that came out made it look like a tap had been turned on. The vet did stem the bleeding after about 6 hours, but it was very much touch and go. He ended up having to have it packed as stiches wouldn't hold.
However, saying this, the actual protusion was all sorted and he never had a futher problem.
