I am having a lorry fitted out and need to make the decision on the awning tomorrow. Is it worth the money on rainy days tacking up? My wife thinks it is a waste of money but as it will be her and the children using the lorry I thought she might really appreciate it on wet days. Any feedback greatly received

At most shows you will not have the time or space to erect an awning. They are fab if you are planning a lot of overnight stays, but otherwise, probably not worth the money

We looked very seriously into this for a while. Sadly they are more trouble than they are worth. The idea is fantastic - although more for shade in the heat than shelter in the rain - it if it raining the horses can stand on. But it is far too easy for a horse to get tangled in the supports and the ones without ground based support are too vulnerable and break too quickly. Plus of course the space problem although potentially that is solved by getting to a venue early and just putting the awing out - although that might not make you too popular!

For us it was the safety risk to the horses which stopped us going for it. I would still love one on those scorching days trying to get the boys (4 legged) shade. But not at the expense of putting them - and other horses - at risk.

Look at the 'Building a horsebox . . Our story' thread by Farmer Chalk he has just had one fitted on that box and it looks/ sounds great but i'm sure it wasnt cheap! it has no supports for the horse to stand on and just rolls out from the side of the lorry

Thanks for your reply hadn't really thought about the room required re other horseboxes. The one I was looking at gets fitted flush with the lorry boxed inside the horse area but at 4.5k it might not be worth it

We have one on the race van (bikes) but wouldn't bother for horses.
Its something else to get ripped off the side (by trees when passing, or a badly placed horse/pony), more to pack away at the end of the day, space taking up and (to be brutally honest) looking like a nob - IMHO, unless you are really needing the extra space.

Would be better off with small caravan tacked on the back.
To be honest, unless you are doing a lot of stay aways, then its really not worth it.

When racing, if we do a 1 day test day, its still easier to use a pop-up gazebo than unfurl awning. We only put the whole rig out when staying over.
