I want to trade in my nissan navarra and ifor williams and get a horsebox instead as i hate all the faffing around with hitching etc. I need something that would carry around 1.1 tonnes (one horse 560kilos and other is 510) which means i would have to go for a 4.5 tonne box.

Most of the smaller ones i've seen are 3.5 tonnes which isnt enough and i've heard dodgy things about some of the side loaders due to instablilty and general safety issues.
So anyone have one and think its great or bought one and think its rubbish.

Any help most appreciated as i dont want to end up with a nightmare box that i cant use.

I am assuming you have a licence to drive anything bigger than 3.5T? If so, there are some nice 2 horse boxes out there i have seen. We actually saw a v smart (think Ford Iveco) yesterday at an event that was a 2 horse (stading sideways) build. V V since!

I think Renault also do several 2 horse boxes with side/side and rear unload(?)

These are the sort of things I was thinking of:-

I would go for a compact 6.00 - 7.5 ton.

On the one I have the container is only 12 feet long from the back of the cab to the rear of the container. It has a rear ramp and two horses stalled diagonally. Small area for tack etc and space in the luton.

I've got a 7.5 ton Leyland Roadrunner; excellent engine, great to drive

thanks for that- like the look of the third one - love fords and that looks pretty manageable. as far as license goes apparently i'm fine as i passed my test in 1991 so can drive anything up to 7.5 tonnes (i think?)

I have a 5.2 tonne Ford Iveco Daily which takes two horses facing forwards (well you could face them backwards if you wanted to), side ramp, small living, lutton and external locker. It is a proper little truck in that it is robust and stable, you don't feel you are driving a van, but drives very easily as it has power steering, a small turning circle and is very easy to reverse. I've had two 17.3" horses in there with no problem and also a fat HW cob (on another occassion!) and everybody had plenty of space. The payload is generous so you don't have to worry about the odd rug, tack and bits and pieces. I love it!

great to hear as this is what i'm aiming at getting - i want something which i dont have to worry about overloading as i tend to overcarry in case of emergencies!
thanks
