Hi All
My poor horse has been unwell for 4 weeks now! He originally had colic signs on a Sunday morning and the vet was called out. they examined him and said he had a nephrosplenic entrapment. They tubed him with epsom salts, gave a pain killer and then told me to trot him hard on the lunge for 50mins to try to contract the spleen and allow the gut to return to where it should be! Anyway, this seemed to work, he was much brighter and back to eating and going to the loo normally. After this though he was very lethargic for a while and his appetite was up and down. Blood tests revealed inflammation somewhere so he was treated with antibiotics and anti inflammatory's. He didn't seem to respond to this and started to lose quite alot of weight. Finally vet decided last week that he needed to go to their clinic for further tests. He's been there since last Wednesday and we're still not really sure what the problem is. Apparently his spleen is quite enlarged so they have been unable to do a belly tap, further blood tests show a reduction in proteins in his blood, glucose tests were normal. Vet tried to scope for ulcers on Thursday after starving him but there was still food in his stomach. They tried again Friday but still food there so thought maybe the colic had been caused by a gastric impaction which is apparently quite rare. They have been tubing him with diet coke all weekend to try to dissolve the food left in his stomach and a specialist is due there this afternoon with a powerful ultrasound to try to see what is going on. I'm praying that we finally get some answers today! Sorry for the long post, just wandered if anyone had experienced anything similar?
