As per the title really, I'm in the process of researching breeds suitable for us and really like the sound of these.

We live on our own yard with 20acres so it will be out on the yard with me for a good 3/4 hours a day but I also need something that isn't a hyper type breed that's going to be tearing round the house etc as I have 2 children under 5

Any thoughts greatly appreciated

i meet a lady out walking who has one, seems like a really nice temperament and is really good with the children, and is quite relaxed at home as long as she has had plenty of excercise, her only problem is that she loves water and the boggier the better so sometimes she is half black. she also says her coat takes a lot of looking after . that s all i know about them.

Not my breed but I know plenty of them.
Lots of hair so lots of grooming & a strong stubborn streak in most so you need to set boundaries from day one.
The club website has won awards and will point you in the right direction. http://www.wheaten.org.uk/

We had one for 14yrs. She had a good temperament and was good with our three kids, training is possible if you are determined and consistent. I'd worry about the amount of grooming required and the level of filth the long coat will bring in from the yard! Have you had a look at an Irish terrier? Very similar size and build but a shorter coat.

Yes, my friend had one. Not an easy breed and the coat was really difficult. I ended up clipping it completely off for her , as it got matted, even with daily grooming.

Years ago I had looked in to one - but what put me off was something on the breed page that said that you'd have to get used to the mud color walls from dog height down. Err, not hugely house proud but don't need the extra work either! I got a border terrier instead ;)

Professionally I don't see these very often - they're not a hugely popular breed. They aren't the most biddable by nature and many of my colleagues dread them as they can often be aggressive in the salon. I've groomed a handful over my career and one was lovely - but the rest were pretty sharp.
