Thinking about setting one up, but being a total techno ignoramous, have no idea how it all works, or where to start!

Can anyone explain?

Just want something simple and idiot-proof. Do you need to set up your own website, and do the cameras need wiring into the mains?

See, total ignoramous.

You need a wireless long range one. We have one but it's deadly boring watching your horse eat and poo!
We put ours in for our pregnant mare to keep an eye and it did its job well

Thanks Bossanova. Wireless long range is what I need then. Where did you get yours from?

How do you then set it up so you can access it through your computer?

Actually yes, Loopyloop, good question. My yard is 4.5 miles away from where I live: will it work from that distance?!

Is that a ridiculously stupid question?!

I think that's a good question, but then I am known for my amazing ability to ask ridiculously stupid questions without realising......!!

No, it's range lasts about 50m or so and isnt good at going through trees etc

The first company that came up on an internet search!!
It came with full instructions, was easy to install. We chose one with night vision and with the option to add in more webcams to get different angles

If you live 4.5miles from your yard then you need a computer at the yard connected to the internet... otherwise it's not really possible I don't think...

Wireless wouldn't work here and we live 50m from the stables, because the barn walls are concrete...so ours are all wired... See here http://video.myhorsecam.com/rollestone/rollestone1.htm for our current yard cam - shortly to become foalcam as foaling draws closer again!

It doesnt work like that. People who have webcams in their horses stables either live at home are live on a yard that offer it as a service.

The webcams need to be (as boss said) long range wireless cams but they are no where near the range you want. You'd need to be living on the same premises as your horse and even then, certain things can cause interference (tree leaves for example are terrible for this).

You can get webcams that can stream through routers, but that means you need a router at the yard (on all the time of course) which in turn, means you need a net connection at the yard

Basically, if you dont live on the premises, its really not feasible unless you can persuade the yard owner to set it up

We tend to use ours when we have a sick horse, you position the camera in the stable, put the receiver thingy on the windowledge of the house and the pic appears on a channel on the tv (can't you guess son sets it up not me!)
The new stables will have security system cameras plus beeper alerts in various places, so the cameras will then show if anyone is mooching around that shouldn't be. It isn't that expensive to fit up.
Ours works via the radio network I think?

OK, now I'm enlightened. Webcam is not a possibility as I live too far away from the yard, and there's no way the farmer will put one in.

Sounds like proper CCTV is the only option. Wonder how much that costs...
