Hi everyone

I had never heard of NOWZAD before, but after listening to the section on Ramblings at the weekend I was amazed I had never heard of this charity before! It was so touching and heartbreaking to hear about all those abandoned dogs that find their way into army bases in Afghanistan to be cared for by our soldiers and then brought back to the UK.

It's such an amazing charity, I just wondered if anyone else heard the program and what they thought. I can't believe the sanctuary in Afghan might have to close. EVERYONE should know about the work they are doing out there.

I didnt hear the programme but am aware of Nowzad, a few rescues do take their dogs in when they come over here. Its quite emotive given the fact the soldiers bond with them and there was one case of a soldier who was planning to bringing a dog over but was sadly killed. The soldiers family still arranged for the dog to come over and adopted it as it was their sons wishes.

Given the amount of dogs in rescue and dogs being put down here it is quite controversial bringing over more dogs. But given the difference they make to soldiers lives I can understand why they do it.

I didn't hear the programme but have read the books written by the soldier who started the charity, and rescued the first dog Nowzad. They are heartbreaking in places but heartwarming too, well worth reading.

I didn't hear it either. But i read first book about the original rescue dog the charity is named after by the soldier- i have never cried so much reading a book, definitely a good charity. My bro was in afghan and they had a litter of pups in the base with the mum they keep a lot of the lads sane i think

Hi Dizzy

That's what I thought was the most amazing about it: that brave lads like your brother can bring home their doggy companions that have made such a difference to their lives. I can't even imagine what it must be like to fight over there and if these dogs make life a bit better for our soldiers they deserve to be brought back and have a better life.

Indeed i totally agree with u. They only tend to come back when a base will be closed too as until then the others look after them or at least that's the idea i got from brother. Obviously some lads make a true connection and want them back no matter what.

I've read the book, a definate tear jerker In previous tours my OH has spend a lot of his spare time with the local dogs. We have manged to avoid bringing any home so far! At the moment he's in the middle of the desert so the only dogs there are the army dogs. It's good really we already have 3 rescue dogs we haven't got room for any more!!

On the intro tour when he got there they were told they couldn't touch the guard dogs only the sniffer dogs. There were several soldiers who couldn't work because they'd decided to have a pat and got bitten.
