My other half keeps being hounded by these people! He said he did one advert for a fireman publication and then kept getting calls from loads of other emergency services saying that he had comitted to advertising with them and that they wanted their money. When he said he hadn't committed they got funny and said they had a recording of him saying it, shall they send it, he said please do send it over, that was about a month ago and nothing yet!
If yopu didn't make first contact with them, be very careful and do not agree. Also, don't say much on the phone, as they record and then edit the tape.
My saddler got caught by one for whom they pretended to be Devon & Cornwall Police, after he advertised in Your Horse. There are loads of different 'companies' operating,. often together, and you may well get calls from other companies claiming that you agreed to advertise with them too, and owe them X hundred pounds. They will go as far as get a 'fake' solicitor to call, even replaying the 'edited' tape. Be aware, the names of companies they use may be of real companies, but they are not really acting for them.
Try googling them and the telephone number, that is if they did not with hold their number as they usually do.
If they are genuine, I can only apologise for being over-cautious.
Hmm interesting. I think we might have been called too (had an advert in YH recently). I politely declined to place an advert, but wonder if I will be getting an invoice/chasing calls soon. Thanks for the warning
If I can stop one person being caught, I'm happy. Trading Standards and the Police are well aware of this going on, but the Police cannot take action (at least in this instance) as they get around it by publishing about ten copies of an item.
If you do get Invoices etc, send them a letter firmly adviising you have not asked for or agreed to any advertising, so in actual fact owe them nothing. Trading Standards advised not to just ingore completely.
Anybody may like to check this link for 'suspect' companies/company names.
Donklet - many thanks. The company that is bothering me is listed as being a company being monitored. Ok, so it may be legit in the end, but the fact it is listed, suggests that other people are also not happy with practices that are veing invoked.
I with contact the TAPA and also Trading Standards.
