This is a very difficult post for me to make, but I am seriously considering rehoming my beloved Lab x Springer. He is two years old and as you would expect for his breed needs a lot of exercise and stimulation.

I am currently working full time (6 days a week) and studying part time. I live at home and up until now my dad has been walking and looking after him during the day for me. As time has gone on my dad has become less and less able to control Baxter and is now at the stage where he daren't walk him (he is too strong for him on the lead and bolts for the road off it). Bax has none of these issues with me and when I am in is a model citizen, but dad simply can't cope with him anymore and is unable to exert any authority over him if I am out.

Whilst I take him out morning and evening he is still difficult for dad to cope with during the day. He IS well trained but has learnt that dad cannot discipline him and he can do as he pleases when it is only the two of them at home.

I honestly think he would be better off with someone else who has to time to look after him properly. He is incredibly clever and would make a fabulous agility dog or cracking beaters/gamekeepers dog. I absolutely adore him but dont know if I am doing the right thing by keeping him?
Has anyone ever been in a similar situation and how did things work out? I really dont know what to do for the best :(

I rehome dogs all the time in order to fins them homes where their needs are met and I have also rehomed dogs that have been in my care as my own along time before placing them into a new home, why? A, I can't keep millions and B, they have a chance of a better life where someone can spend more time on/with them than I can.
There are homes out there more suitable that what we can offer thats for sure just take all the care in the world to make sure he is safe and you offer him "back up" if any problems arise.
Home check and don't transfer his chip until you have proof he is settled and carry out a home check. I would also neuter him before he went, all of the above things can help make sure he ends up in a genuine pet home.
Only you know what is best for him, good luck:)

Contact your local Lab rescue they might be able to offer back up and help rehoming. Good luck.

What a horrible situation to be in :(

I would have another springer x lab in an instant fabulous dogs. Such a willing attitude to life.

Have you any doggy daycare etc around you? Or how about an outside kennel at your house then he isnt under your dads feet?

My daughter rehomed her patterdale x, he was a total nightmare, lovely in the house but would kill anything outside. He killed 100 pheasant poults when he disappeared on a walk. He was a totally inappropriate gift from a bf. We live on a farm and she was at uni so there was no way we could keep him. We put a thread on here and he went to a working home and they were delighted with him. It was such a relief.

Many many years ago we rehomed a Great Dane who turned my well balanced GSD into a raving pack animal. He was also extremely possessive of me. I was heavily pregnant at the time and my husband finally lost his patience when the Dane went for some poor chap in the lane who just wanted to pass the time of day!
I was heartbroken and felt I had let him down but he went to a good home as an 'only child'.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Circumstances change and dogs need to know where they stand.
