Hi,
Sorry if this has been repeated before but just wondering what others do? I'm at a cross roads vehicle wise and don't know which way to go.

Currently I'm driving a passenger Nissan Terrano and I use this to tow. It cost €1109 a year on private road tax and €900 on insurance. To fill the tank will cost about €70 and that last for about 450 - 500 miles or a bit less if I'm towing.

I've seen a little horse lorry but after words with my solicitor (another story!!!) I realise that I can no longer afford to buy it - it was going to cost €29,000 (does not include the trade in of €19000 for the jeep) I'd have to come up with €10,000 myself. But half of me still would like to buy it, but I know if I pushed myself, I could afford it.

But now I'm thinking of buying another Terrano (I love them!

) but it would be commercial - cheaper tax. And then I would buy a little 1.0 litre car to tot about in.

So can anyone help me in my decision please. Would it be cheaper to run the lorry and car or comercial jeep, trailer and car or stick with the current jeep and trailer.

What do other people do?

Thanks in advance

I could only really vote with the views I came to when examing my own situation just over a year ago. It worked out more cost effective for me to move to a small car (a Clio) and a little wagon. I bought a Renault Master 2003 chasis, newly converted for just over £17000. I only need to travel one large horse though - you do have to watch the weight on those. They are comparitively very cheep to run though. Great on fuel and only requires an MOT, not plating and horses tend to travel very well in them because they travel backwards and that helps there balance

Well I have a Nissan Terrano as my car and tow vehicle and it is fab...I would deffinately have another one. My husband brought one too when he changed his car!

We've got a swb shogun for towing and i've a micra for everyday use. Both are over 10 years old. The micra costs me about £20/wl in fuel-bargain!

IME it's cheaper to buy a very economical car and have a lorry. But it does depend on how many miles you do in each. I was doing 25K a year in the car and having a car that did 50mpg at its worst made a huge difference to my costs.

what sort of mileage do you do??
we have the same sort of situation. i have a 10 mile commute to work and OH has nearly 20miles of little country roads to get to work. we opted to run our discovery until it dies (about a year we think) using it for my commute and towing, and for OH to run a little 1.2l fiesta which we also use if we need to make any longer journeys. its perfectly comfortable for long journeys, and a lot less thirsty than the disco.

once the disco goes we will prob replace it with a short wheel base mitsubishi shogun or something, anything capable of towing 2 big horses that is less thirsty than the disco has been!

i think if your not doing too many miles that you just stick with 1 4x4, if however you are doing lots you get a little car to run about it.

does this even make any sense? i've been distracted about half a dozen times writing it and lost track!

I've got the same problem- SWB Pajero is costing me about £400 a month getting to and from work so I am looking at getting a 50MPG car for work and just keeping the Pajero for towing with the trailer and maybe driving it in the snow!

I can't afford to sell Paj and trailer for a lorry so will keep them. Insurance on 2nd car seems ok too

I'm buying a small 3.5ton lorry but keeping the trailer - they never break down!!! We have a small car to run around in and if required I can rent or borrow a 4x4 to tow. Works out cheaper!

I have a 1 litre run about and leave my 4x4 just for towing. I have also got Norwich Unions drive and pay insurance for the 4x4- saving me loads
