Apparently the horse I ride has been diagnosed anaemic as he was very sluggish and has been given a supplement. Anyone know any more about this? Is there anything I should know when I next ride him?
happened my pony, he wasn't his normal self.
He had 2 weeks off (recommended) and a supplement plus I think some antibiotics or something as he was run down. Plus electrolytes. Actually got a lot of stuff for him.
WE took him to england 2 weeks later and he was jumping out of his skin so no long term effects!
Would check diet though. He should be having some time off I think?
He has had about two weeks off and is being ridden gently now (he is always ridden gently though because he is 17 and laminitic) but I have been told to keep an eye if he seems more lazy than usual when riding in case he is off colour. So were the supplements a long term thing?
nope. Had until they were finished.
Started using electrolytes after that and have to say would be more careful if he was lazy.
REsolved quickly though so no problems.
My lad had it last year and i gave him Equimins red and i found it really helped.I still give it to him now once a week or so just to keep him topped up!.I still am very paranoid and still keep looking at his gums.It does seem to knock the stuffing out of them but i will get better quite quickly!!.I hope you horse recovers quickly!!.
Thanks. What should I look for in the gums? Isn't my horse you see - I'm just up there a couple of times a week, but it's my job to keep check when I'm doing him, of course.
Pale gums is a good sign of it.They should be a nice salmon pink colour and when you gently press you finger on them and take your finger away again the pink colour should return almost instantly. At the worst my lad had his gums were an almost off white colour.
I have a horse that is on and off anaemic most of the time. He has courses of Hb formula - not cheap at £70 a go. This year he has had one course of it and then I put him on a supplement called Equicell. He has had no problems since.
Racing demon recommended it, she works for the company, maybe give her a pm.
My friends eventer was diagnosed with aneamia last year. Her diet was altered to ensure that she had a constant supply of hay, and her hard feed was changed - basing it on a high fibre diet rather than cereal. She was also put on procell.
Her bloods are checked regularly now to ensure that they are as they should be - and touch wood she has shown no further signs of the problem.
My old horse used to regularly get in and I used to give him an iron supplement then. Just take it steady and remember he will not be as forward going, just keep a close eye. I would recommend a blood test for tapeworm though as this can be a cause of anaemia
My mare was on redcell for anaemia, but it was a mild case and diagnosed early. I used to complete one bottle of redcell (or propell - I think they are the same stuff but different brands) then a month off then another bottle etc etc, she seemed to do well on this routine and did not show any further symptoms.
our boy suffer from being anaemia two years ago, we gave him an iron supp and injections and got him round after resting him for 2 weeks. Since then we've used a seaweed supplement and touch wood its never again been a problem.
There is a problem with a virus and anaemia at my yard, over the last 4 years about 25 horses have had it, and they don't all have the same vet. The standard treatment is 3 jabs each a week apart then 4 weeks of powders (vitamin B and selenevite) then they are blood tested again. So they have 7 weeks off minimum and a number of horses have had 2 if not three courses of treatment. All the horses are in different fields, fed different things, all the soil and water has been tested and the vets are just as confused as us. Hopefully one day we'll get to the bottom of it.
