Yippee, just agree to buy some more land and will need to get it re-seeded

What grass mixture is best - I think most commercial grasses are high sugar for cows and not that brilliant for horses?? Any suggestions, I have native types.

There are specialist paddock mixes for horses and ponies, try Googling. Bostonseeds.co.uk or meadowmania.co.uk stock paddock mixes, so you might want to start there.

Most mixtures contain Ryegrass, even the ones destined for horse paddocks, it's not so much the sugar as the fact that it's very high protein.
What you want in horse pasture are: Fescues, Bentgrass, Timothy, Cocksfoot.
Depending on soil type you might need the Ryegrass as well.
There is a mixture that has all the desirables for horses and no Ryegrass, it's normally carried by suppliers as 'Environmental Scheme Buffer Strips'.
ETS - it's very competitively priced as well, as it doesn't mention horse or pony anywhere in the name, will try to find you a link.

Matlin - you star, that is great information and Slightly Foxed, thanks for the alternative suppliers. It is really exciting to have some more grazing for next year and I want to get it right.

Interesting about the different levels of protein in different grasses, I always thought it was sugar content, but I guess if I think of all the different wheat varieties available, then that does make sense.

the 'pony paddock' mixes I know sold are specifically high in rye grass because of its hard wearing properties. Unfortunately not so good to eat
