We got a bulk order online for £4.20 a 15k bag which we thought fairly cheap. First delivery was fine, we were all happy with it so when they ran out ordered another bulk delivery.
These bags have got like fluffy bits mixed in with it, I presume it could be from inside seed cases?
The horses are eating it this time and we didn't notice they were from the last lot so I think they are eating the fluffy bits.
Anyone know if it is harmful or if it could be full of sugar? There must be something they like in it as they seem to go for this in preference to haylage:confused:

I had a horse eat hemp bedding, not the fluffy kind. That horse ate anything. I put half a bag of wood chippings on top whenever I mucked out and the bed eating stopped. Horse didn't come to any harm for the bit that he did eat.

I don't use hemp, never have but a quick google shows that the BHS says that horses eating hemp/flax is rare but it is indigestible and so you should be careful if your horse does eat it. Another website (sorry forgot which!) says that it is in edible (or should be!) and may cause swelling to the stomach. So I'd be careful if they are eating it.

A few years ago a friend tried her mare on hemp bedding which the mare took to eating, friends response was "Never again would I use that b****y stuff, horse was away with the fairies!"

Well you know why and where it comes from... Mine loved it.. was veeerrryyyy chilled out on it!! ha

In all seriousness I loved it and it had eucalyptus in it jso smelt lovely and fresh all the time ;-)

Wasnt fluffy at all and mushed up when wet nicely

That is extreeeeeemely cheap for hemp bedding and I would want to be happy it was processed to the same standard as the usual Aubiose /equivalents.

They shouldnt be eating it, and there should be very little fluff (like maybe one or two noticeable bits in a bag, at least thats all Ive found with aubiose) - if they are eating it then I would change product or spray it with dilute disinfectant.

I absolutely love Aubiose. It is very expensive at nearly £10 a bale, but I use so much less there isn't much difference.

However, my horse is allergic to it!!!! All hemp bedding gives him allergic conjunctivitis.

Damn!!!!

Hemcore had the little fluffy bits in it and never had a problem. Then used Aubiose and was fine. They tell you to damp it down first but I found after a few peees it was fine. Preferred it to shavings or straw.
