I had the dentist up today for my new one born 5.5.07 making him rising 5 microchip done sept 07 matches up in passport and horse dentist says his front teeth are making him the age of 31/2 and back ones tell the same story I'm confussed now how much I should be working him I will feel guilty any advice pls can his teeth be a yr behind I no it s pretty precise at a young age to age a horse by teeth thanks

Blimey dont get me started on trying to age a horse by its teeth. My new girl has been aged at just 2 by one vet and almost 3 by another, I sent off for her passport as her old owner had not bothered, he did not breed her but has clearly guessed her age and guessed wrong as her passport says march 09 which is not right.
However, a 31/2 yr old should technically be easy to age due to the very front teeth, as in the front two looking longer at some point

However, it is not always accurate

If he was an experienced, reputable equine dentist I should think his guess would be fairly accurate as to your horse's actual age.

I had a dentist out last week who told me how old he thought my mare was, without realising that I had bred her myself so knew exactly how old she was - he was only out by a couple of months!

That is reassuring, this is what I am thinking of doing as the EDT is the expert after all, its their profession. Two vets have given two different ages so far with the new girl

I had him vetted when bought him last nov the micro chip matches passport the dentist is very experience he trains other people. I'm confused on how to bring this horse on and don't want to over load his work if he is only rising 4 what do you all think I should do thanks

Tough one, perhaps he is just an 'odd case' as it were and his teeth are not actually keeping up with the rest of him?
Hope you can find out, I understand how frustrated you must feel now knowing for sure now
