On Monday I could hear a duck calling during the day so went to have a look near the stream behind the house to see if I could see it. I couldn't and it did stop so presumed all OK and it had flown off. Didn't hear it yesterday but tonight I got home and there's a duck sat on the roof of our house. We do have ducks on the reservoir close by but I just thought it was odd for a lone duck to be on the roof?

It was on the roof again this morning so think it must be a bit disoriented and maybe lost it's pals or maybe it thinks it's a pigeon?

It looks well enough :)

It's fine. I used to have one that did that. Sometimes they will do it in a new area as well. It's a busy time of year and sometimes they just need a rest.

Yes, we've a couple of male ducks hanging around aimlessly at the yard at the moment. Quite often there are a few young males following a female, then when she chooses a mate, the un chosen ones are rejected and a bit lost and down for a week or so. As I said, if it can fly to the roof it's not hurt, so will be fine.

Mostly, the ducks that are on roofs are Shellducks, and mostly drakes hanging about in pairs or even groups, are those which have mates which are down on eggs, and they're doing the pacing and waiting bit, or they're the spare pricks at a wedding, if you see what I mean, and they'll have to wait until next year to mate, or may even replace another male, who dies.

It's a system, and it works, sort of.

Had to stop car and usher stupid ducks away yesterday, they were having a little bath in a water filled pothole in the road!! On way past later they were asleep on the side of the road, middle of countryside and they choose the road!!

I also saw what looked like a very young heron stood by a shallow puddle on the lane, I approached it to check it was OK (it was blocking lane and didn't move when I drove up to it) it flew off and tonight was on my arena but again flew off! Hoping its OK.
