Its just a bit of an idea at the moment and something to work towards but was just thinking of doing boarding kennels and maybe cattery as well. Just any tips/ideas would be really really welcome
, it's rewarding and yes it can make a good living if u get yourself a good reputation, I am licenced and regulated, u have to have waste licenses and regulations for kennel sizes, ventilation, health and safety.
Start small and gradually expand, get yourself to vets, and offer them invites to visit, and take a look around your establishment, thats where the majority of your clients will come from, heck...offer the vet staff half price stay for their dogs
Listen, to what people want, from a boarding kennel, as u need to stand out.
Do u have experience of dogs/cats.....do u have the environment to set up?
Cala, you do home boarding, I have always toyed with the idea of having dogs to our place, we have one dog run and a couple of stables, depending on the dog as we do take in neighbours etc and know which ones are ok to let out off lead (and which ones arent!)
Do you have to have license etc. to run home boarding and do you need to have kennels etc. as well, could you get in trouble for advertising 'boarding' and not having been registered etc?
Do you know anything about pet sitting, do you need anything for that?
thanks
I`ve had dogs/cats all my life and look after friends/famillies dogs while they have been away (although odviously not the same
) and i`ve done some dog walking for local people. I dont have the environment at the mo although we are looking around as it is just an idea at the mo
I have a converted garage to doggi room, so it's an indoor doggy room, with a large pen/play area.....to be honest, I usually put the rescues out there and keep the boarders inside, for instance I have a borzoi in at the moment, he is with my own dogs, if I leave them unsupervised, I usually put my own dogs in the doggy room, and leave the boarders in the house, I do take more than one at at time, if they are long standing boarders, but generally just 1, if it's new.
I have a license from the council and had to have a home check and a registered vet, I have a cattery, I can board about 10 cats at a time.
since I started home boarding, I had not had 1 day this year...when I have not had a boarder in
, alot of my clients have 2-3 dogs, and I have 2 cockers, that stay every second weekend, as the owner travels on business.
I charge more for a short weekend stay, like this weekend I have the cockers, next weekend a westi, I charge double for this.
Some of my boarders are crate trained and actually come with their crates, this makes life easier, as I can crate when unsupervised, or bedtime.
Im fully boked over christmas, and also charge double for bank hols.

You need to be fully licenced/registered and insured to advertise, the insurance is very reasonable, do u mean pet sitting...as in going to other peoples homes?
You need a council visit, it's pretty easy, they are not strict, esp with home boarding as opposed to kennels, their is alot more regulation involved in kennels/cattery, my cattery has to be washable materials, have adequate indoor and outdoor facility, well ventilated e,t,c.
Home boarding is simply a visit to your home and a few questions.
... I need it just to keep my all of own dogs, Lol!
I have been tempted to do home boarding too Cala, not sure whether this would be something people over here would be interested in though. I wouldn't have the dogs in my house though; I don't have my own dogs in the house.
