My great dane is reasonably well behaved but his one major fault is that he steals other dogs balls (the throwing kind) when I take him to the park and will not , under any circumstances, give them back. It is becoming really embarassing to the point where people are now pointing and shouting at us. does anyone else have this problem and how to solve it

If he is bringing the ball back to you - swap it for his favourite titbit and teach him the command Drop whilst doing so. Might be worth a try if you haven't already.

if you throw a ball for him he getsit and will not bring it back at all so no chance of saying drop and what would be the point in taking a ball to the park for him he would just run off with it leave it somewhere out of sight and then go and steal someone elses ball.

I cannot see how this problem can be solved and would love the dog whisperer or someone of that type to suggest an answer bet no one does.

Same as any other dog.
Work on his drop command at home(treats and fuss when he does as asked) and once he has that he should be better when out.

And Spaniel is right, he clearly wants a ball so get him one of his own!
Teach him to fetch, not natural to all dogs and makeit a game for him when out and about.

You really dont need a dog whisperer jella, just a good dog training class to show you how to work with your dog on these basics.

If thats the case perhaps you should work on his recall a bit more and as suggested above do lots of training in the garden or even better use a corridor/hallway.
