Hi all,

My mare is 14 years old and in good health, her joints do crack sometimes but i have been reassured by chiropracter that this is just 'dry clicking' and nothing to worry about. I would like to give her a supplement to keep her joints mobile and in great condition so we can carry on hacking & jumping for many years. Has anyone used a supplement that they feel has benefitted the horse in this way?..... (must be non- heating!) Also, how often do u guys lunge your horses? I like to lunge mine sometimes to keep her fit but i worry about excess strain on joints?

There is alot of information on this forum on joint supplements. What works for some horses doesn't seem to have the same effect for others!

Personally as a preventative I use Suppleaze gold as it came out very popular on here with users and as it's a good price too so I thought I would go with that one - Plus I like the people on the end of the phone lol. However others will swear by different brands - There is actually a really good post by someone who did a price comparison on all the JP's I think it was called Aprils Analysis or something - worth checking out if you can find it.

Goodluck! (it's a bit of a minefild!)

My mare has clicky joints. I use something that you may laugh at but really works with her and she hardly clicks at all now: Apple Cider Vinegar! I give her about 50ml (or thereabnouts) per day in her feed and I saw a difference in say 3-4 weeks. I get mine in Tesco and its €1.99 I think and I go through 3 bottles a week for 2 horses (although one horse gets 150ml per day so you might only use 1-2?). Give it a try! It really works!!

Re lunging: I lunge about once a week jsut to give them something different to do and there are no effects on their joints. I prefer to lunger on a 15-20m circle.

I use Riaflex Complete and 50:50 on one horse as a preventative and on the other who has issues. Fantastic customer service and very informative website. One of the best products I have found and made a real diference on my veteran. www.riaflex-equine.co.uk.
I think there is a compariaon sheet somewhere on this forum which is worth checking out.

ooh thanks monstermunch! any ideas where it is?

Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory so a really good start for protecting joints, I use NAF linseed or omega oils, (unfortunately you get what you pay for with oils). Also I would swear that cortaflex gave my arthritic pony another two years to his life and we could see very quickly if he ran out of it.
