I weigh tape regularly but tbh I can only tell whether he's gained or lost since I got him/ last month/ last week etc unless I've got a guideline weight approximation to work with to tell me if he's about right or overweight :o

Anyone know? Is there even such a thing? :o

Weight tapes can be really inaccurate, and are only good for seeing if they have gained/lost weight, that's all I use mine for. Condition scoring is much better for seeing if they actually need to lose or gain weight.

If it helps at all, my 14.2hh heavyweight cob is 430kg on the weight tape, probably a 3.5 and more than likely weighs nearer to 500kg I would have thought.

Aye I know they're notoriously inaccurate ;) and they can be out by about 100kgs but I was thinking that if I had a rough guide of between such and such a weight up to such and such is acceptible I'd have a better idea ha ha! :o

I'd probably condition score mine at about 3-3.5 too :o

My lightweight cob was 533 kg on weighbridge in August last year but he had been out of proper work so was a bit tubbier than I like him.

He is now leaner and fitter - in endurance shape - and I would say he is about 500 kg.

This is him on Sunday after an endurance ride:

I'm going to print this pic out and wave it in Loki's face as a motivational tool to show him how much toning up he needs to do ;) Last weigh tape day he was 432kg but he's only been back to work for the last month or so, so he's got a fair bit of fittening up to do :D We're working on it though :)

My 14.2hh Friesian cross is always 577kgs on the weigh tape (I know: !!!), no matter what, and she has gone from really fat to being able to see ribs: still 577kgs. So they are really inaccurate and are only measuring the girth of your horse (be that tubby or not).

Loki went from 415kg (he was atually looking pretty good weight wise, not too thin but about right) in the start of January but by April he'd gained a lot of weight and was 448kg (33kgs!) but now since bringing him back into regular work I think we're on the right track and have started to lose some of the excess weight.
Hopefully if we keep on the right track he'll be a bit lighter again and looking fine :)

Gosh Tiga when did he foal? Haha he looks brilliant now!

I think around 500 but very hard to say.My haffy is good around 470 or slightly more if muscular, she is too skinny at the mo :-(

I would find out what your horse is on the weight tape when you can feel ribs by running your hand over him and not see them (obviously it might be difficult to get to that stage!) Condition scoring is good but I still use a weight tape to try and monitor loss and gain as it can all start to blur into one when you see them every day!

Aye that's what I use it for, you're right it is so hard to see the wood for the trees sometimes when you see them everyday! I can feel them fairly easily but they still have a good covering on them and I'd like him to loose a little bit more :)
