One of my girls has always been super sensitive and we've tried just about everything suggested to us in the past to prevent her girth from rubbing: string girth; wintec anti-chaff; webbed; leather; leather with more padding; gel eeze type girth sleeve; lambswool sleeve.

We thought we'd got onto a winner with the lambswool sleeve which has generally worked for around a year now with occasional bad days, it gets washed, properly conditioned and brushed regularly and is as soft as the day we got it.
Went for a hack earlier and she's been rubbed raw in patches :( its actually broken the skin.
Examined the sleeve afterwards and there's NOTHING new that would have caused it.

Has anyone got the magic girth or rub prevention they can tell me about? Feel like a bad horsewoman but I really don't know what else to try.
Have seen some cut away types but I'm sceptical as to if they will cut away from her arm pit (?) enough to make a difference.

Either a Stubben Cord Girth or a Professional Choice Ventech Girth work for my sensitive mare.

Thanks :) I might dig out her cord one and give it another go but she really didnt seem to like it last time (although she might have just been being awkward).
The Ventech looks very similar to the wintec chaffeless, is it a rubber waffle type material?

The ventech is softer than the wintec. It's neoprene, and I was sceptical (it's quite grippy so I thought it may pull her hair, but doesn't seem to), but soft fussy mare likes it! It's also easy to clean, which can help some horses.

The wintec one still rubbed her but it wasnt as bad as other types, perhaps the Ventech is a good one to try! Thanks every one suggesting it :) **totters off to ebay**

My mare normally rubs around her girth but since changing her to a Fairfax, touch wood, she hasn't had any discomfort which is unusual for her.

Fwiw we get on very well with an aerborn atherstone waffle one with elastic at both ends, the wintec is too wide for him (forwards girth groove) I do add a sleeve at moulting times like now though. I'm not sure he'd get on with the ventech for the same reason (same with stubben cord) as they rub his elbows.

Fairfax didn't do it for my mare, I finally found an Amerigo Protector that so far has done the biz, my girl has a forward girth groove too. Unfortunately they are similar in price to Fairfax (eeek). Have had it 3 weeks so far so good.

We have the complication that it also needs to come in a 42" which eliminates a few of the pricier options nicely!

Have you tried anything neoprene?

Not the most breathable, admittedly, but a friend of mine has a sensitive horse and everything rubbed and caused girth galls. Her vet suggested trying a neoprene girth so she got one and never had a problem since.

I dread to think how much money I have spent on girths for my horse with exactly the same over sensitive skin. 18 months ago I tried the cheapo Shires with the fleece lining: I haven't had a single rub or sore area since. And they do a huge range of sizes too. I wash them regularly and rinse with hair conditioner and it keeps them, super soft.

I've recently got a leather girth from shires as a small rub mark was forming , fantastic girth super soft and no more rub marks.
