Tonight my horse was off his food and generally a bit off colour. He was dragging his back legs and at one point they nearly buckled under him. Any ideas?

Hi - no injuries apparent - the odd scrap in the feild but nothing out of the ordinary. I wondered about colic or nerves.

He has bone spavins in his hocks and navicular syndrome in his front legs so could be linked to this??

the spavin can lead to fusion of the joint in the hock which obviously could slightly effect the movement and stability of the joint (although rarely!)

what is causin the navicular?

hmmmm well that wouldnt cause a problem on the back legs..... if it had been a tendonitis or something I might have thought about it starting ot effect the back legs too.....

tendons and ligaments have very little neuro supply so it might not be them if it was neuro based, although it could be just a degenerative thing that is effecting both back legs.
Or it could be a neuro thing effecting the muscles rather than any other supportive structures.........

or it cud just be he was having a weak day due to not eating very much.... which could be due to a systemic problem (like a bacterial infection or just feeling under the weather)

i talked to the lecturer today about it, and she said that it is almost 99% colic! the bone problems in her legs would not cause this.

If she is over it now then it was prob just a spasmodic colic, but keep an eye on her all the same!

hope she has improved!
