Just taken my horse’s winter rug out which hasn’t been used since the start of the year and found these living on the inside. Does anyone know what they could be? She’s regularly treated with flea/mite treatment from the vets all year round, wormed as she should etc. Also, if anyone has any recommendations of what I could do about them I’d be really gratefulA27EC84D-5A6F-40DE-93EA-AEBBD7B72FF5.jpeg

I washed a saddle pad and set it on my bale of hay and meant to put it away. When I picked it up a couple of weeks later I had similar beasties on it. I set it outside and hoped the birds would eat them.
more upsetting was my cat also slept on that bale and then came in and slept on my bed ? I guess it’s fly larvae of some sort?

clean them off and sponge down the rug in case of smaller ones in lining, they look like a moth lava or such which have damaged the rug, I would check the area you stored it and other rugs for more.

Yes, moths - cedar/lavender mothballs are useful to store rugs away with as moths dont like certain aromas of essential oils.
Theyre harmless to horse and us - theyre just living out their life-cycle - but they do damage natural fabrics, and could very well ruin a real wool rug liner. They dont damage synthetic fabrics.

When i moved i had clothes wrapped in bags and inside suitcases - moths got to a lot of the really nice pure wool items…it was devastating to see holes in everything!

I wouldn’t bet on it! I had a 100% acrylic hacking jacket turned into a string vest by moths. They must have been feeling adventurous (or desperate)
But I’d agree that’s the only time I’ve had something synthetic munched. Usually it’s nice merino jumpers.
