I have owned dogs all my life and have been breeding/showing GSDs for over 20yrs but never seen something quite like this before. My girl has seemed a bit depressed for about a week now and off her food for the last few days so taking her to see the vet this week but last night I noticed some blood in her coat on her shoulder so looked more closely and found this hard black growth about the size of a large pea with an opening on the top which is bleeding, really worried now as I think it could be a melanoma and wondered if anyone had come across something similar?

Thanks for your replies but in all these years of coming across all sorts of things I would say I'm 99.9% certain its not a tick of any kind but then I could be wrong! Hopefully I am and its not what I am thinking. Just examined her all over and found a small mamary tumour as well! Jesus!! Really upset now! Ringing vet tomorrow.

Bear had one of these on his face. In the week he saw the vet and went in to have it off, it almost doubled in size.
But after all the worry it turned out to be a non cancerous growth.
Funnily enough, his son needs the same op on Thursday after an extreme reaction to a tick bite has caused something similar.

it could be anything, foreign body, cyst, etc, is it firmly attached or can you get your fingers behind it? I would be more worried about the mammary tumours at present, is she entire?

Take her to the vets and keep us updated, wishing her bettererer XXXXXX

It's hard to tell from the pic but I think one of my bitches had a cyst which looked very similar. It was right on the top of her wither and used to ooze blood/muck and then go down for a while but fill up again. In the end the vet removed it because it was in such an awkward spot he was concerned about it getting infected as it never drained properly. Hopefully it is something similar in your girl which will go away on its own but worth a trip to the vet to put your mind at ease.

I THINK it is a hystiocytoma,is it a young dog? Not sure if dogs get melanomas ? If it is a hystio it will disappear on it`s own, they are a sort of teenage benign tumour, seen loads of them. Please let us know,it looks interesting!

If it's a hard growth, and it's leaking blood, then it isn't a tick.

How attached is it? If you take it in your nails, can you rotate it? Is it leaking blood from the base, or from the surface?

Alec.

Ets, having just read EK's post, that would be my guess. a.

It looks like something which can be easily removed, make an appointment asap for your own peace of mind. I've never heard of melanomas in dogs either.

Our GSD had something very similar - the vet just said it was an age lump, a fatty cyst and nothing to worry about - and our poor girl does have lumps all over her bless her!
Best to get it checked - from the picture I'm pretty certain it isn't a tick - they are generally grey when engorged. Hopefully will be nothing serious!!
