Someone asked me the other day how old is too old for a mare to be put in foal?
I wasn't exactly sure, now I'm curious.
I know it probably depends on the mare and how many foals the mare has already had, but I mean generally speaking, what age is too old?

Lucy is 20 years old and i was toying with the idea of putting her in foal to a nice colt at work last year. My boss who breeds said it would be ok but obviosly the older they are the more risk there could be. I desided not to as i didn't want to stop compeating her i said if someting went wrong and i couldn't ride then i would prob put her in foal. Now i can't compeate her but i can't put her in foal as her illness is hereditory (sp?) ho hum i guess it was not ment to be.
Some people down the road are trying to put a pony in foal who is 26 but she didn't take last year.

There is a horse at my yard which is in foal and she is 24. Vet comes regulary and checks her and she is in perfect health. The summer/autum just gone was the first year in her life that she has'nt suffered from sweet itch!!
